Did Kessler just get shafted by Sauerland?

Apparently Kessler will now vacate the WBC title thereby opening up for the title to be at stake in the Froch-AA fight.

Kessler will likely be the WBC champion emeritus.

Here's the question: Why didn't Kessler just keep his title? Surely the WBC would have allowed him an injuryrelated break and the belt would ensure Kessler a bigger fight and a better purse-split when he returns.

I know that if I was his manager that's the deal I would make.

You can say that leaving the belt in the supersix is the honourable thing to do, but it seems as if Mikkel Kessler is paying a price he didn't have to.

It's clear that Sauerland, who also promotes Abraham, has a clear interest in the the belt being in the tournament, so they have obvious motives to make Kessler vacate.

    Thoughts?

Probably. But I think that's the best thing to do. Besides, Kessler said he wants to fight the winner so he'll get a chance to win it back although he wont because Ward or Dirrell will obviously smoke him.

not really, either way kessler had to pull out correct?

sauerland just basically said, drop the title and i will gurantee you a big pay day shot at the winner for 3-4 of the 168 belts

very good deal for kessler in my opinion

Sauerland said he had a verbal agreement of Kessler getting a shot at the s6 winner in 2011.

A VERBAL agreement! Just like the verbal agreement Hennesey allegedly got from Sauerland regarding Froch-AA being staged in Nottingham. So I wouldn't put any emphasis on that.

The agreement is verbal. That's the thing. This is business and the there's big money at stake.

Personally I'd take the WBC belt any day over a verbal agreement on a big fight.

            philosophizing.
with leaving the belt behind. does that make it so kess doesnt have to fight weak mandatories?
maybe he go for big bucks fight with gifted bute.

if butes team allows their moneymaker to take a risk.

This belt will be vacant so that the Abraham-Froch winner takes it. They are hoping Abraham will have this belt

A verbal agreement is legally binding. In the case of Hennessey I don't think there was a single witness to the verbal agreement, in this case there obviously is. Also, in Hennessey's case I wonder if Kalle had the authority to promise such a thing.

Either way a verbal agreement from Showtime is worth a hell of a lot more than a verbal agreement from a crook like Wilfriend Sauerland, especially since there would have been multiple parties present for the negotiation.

As I stated in my other thread, Sauerland will be looking to sc**** as much money out of Kessler as they possibly can. Giving the belt to Abraham is the first way they can profit off an inactive Kessler since they have no guarantee he will ever make a full recovery.

If i was the champion i would not vacate my belt still he just got it from Froch and now Froch and Abraham will have the chance to fight for it, that's a good thing.

but its a big fight for 3 titles, as long as the verbal agreement goes through, kessler should be fine. if it does not, I am sure he can sue
