Comments Thread For: Team Berto Takes Bad Stance on WBC Mandate

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - I’m a big fan of Lou DiBella.

I’m equally fond of Andre Berto.

But when I read their names in stories concerning a welterweight title bout against Selcuk Aydin now mandated by the World Boxing Council, I cringe a little.

Because they couldn’t be more wrong.

Aydin, for those unaware, is an unbeaten 26-year-old Turk ranked second by the WBC among contenders for the title belt Berto’s kept with four defenses since mid-2008.

And when DiBella claims “nobody knows” him, he’s not stretching the truth.

His list of foes is familiar to just the hardest of the hardcore, he’s fought all but two bouts in either Germany or Turkey and his most recent win – a June 5 split decision over Jo-Jo Dan – was close enough that his own promoter, Ahmet Öner, conceded “we were on the lucky end.”

So if you’re arguing an Aydin fight won’t cover Berto’s next boat payment, I won’t quibble.

But when Lou contends that’s reason enough to simply ignore WBC rule, it’s time to throw a flag.

For at least a couple of reasons.

On the small scale, the nose-thumbing toward a championship requirement is more than a mite nervy from an incumbent who’s not made a mandatory defense in 19 months. [Click Here To Read More]

I disagree with this. I'm no Berto fan, but I think if he fought him, people would be *****ing. And I personally am all for better fights, even if it means vacating a title.

Now, it's not like Berto has anyone else to face right now, but if an opportunity comes up I don't blame him for dealing with his mandatory.

Word on the street is Collazo can't make 147 anymore.

His career aint looking good right now.

He fought a 9-16 dude after Berto and hasn't fought since.

He doesn't deserve a title shot

People would hate on Berto no matter who he fights, so threads like these are pretty pointless. If he fights Adyin, people will be talking about how bad of a fight it is and how he's ducking so and so.

Berto should just fight his mandatory or a top ten WW.

                He should stay active.

The longer he stays on the sidelines the more the criticism will grow.

Exactly. If he can't get a big name he should at least stay fighting, stay in the minds of the public. A highlight reel knockout of Aydin would make Berto look good. It would make him more of a draw and set up bigger fights. Maybe the Mosley-Mora winner. I think Berto and his team are afraid, Aydin is too high risk little reward. Unknown fighters from other countries can sometimes be very dangerous.

I think Berto should fight Citron or Cotto at 154, then fight the winner of Mosley vs Mora.If he wins those fights it should set him up for Floyd or Manny.
