    Margarito: Wasted Warrior

    Margarito: Wasted Warrior
    by Cuauhtemoc1502

When I first saw Margarito fight it was against Gabriel Martinez oddly enough. A man who now sits a top of the middleweight division but at that time was out worked by the tough Margarito. I didn't know much about either fighter then, I didn't realize that both would go on to become world champions and would make a huge impact in the sport of boxing.

Margarito was born in Torrance California, he's an American fighter.....technically. Yet his style and rugged demeanor is all Mexican. That comes from his upbringing which was mostly in the rough streets of Tijuana Mexico and where he first saw the great Julio Cesar Chavez fight and instantly knew he wanted to be a fighter.

He was a feared fighter, avoided like the black plague at one point. Even Shane Mosley, the man who would later on go to knock him out, was on tape saying he wasn't ready to fight Margarito. Everyone thought he was on his way to the top and would stay there for a long time. His style was exciting and his heart was never in question, he was a true warrior.

Then came the wraps scandal. Now, I'm not going to get into the details of what happened, because we all know this already. We know there were some pads that were hardened and found in Margarito's gloves. Where they came from, we don't know. Margarito claims he didn't know about them but being a trainer myself and a former amateur boxer, I find it almost impossible to think that I can't see or feel something alien being wrapped around my hands.

As a boxer you get your hands wrapped a thousand times over again, it becomes second nature to you and you get so sensitive to the feeling that any deviation of what you are used to, causes you discomfort and just doesn't "feel" right.

When Margarito appeared before the California State Athletic Commission, he said the same thing he said over a year ago, that he didn't know the illegal pads that were found to contain substances found in plaster of paris, were in his wraps. That he didn't know what his trainer Capetillo was doing.

To those of you who think he should just confess, it's not going to happen. Simply because he cannot go back on his original story and admit guilt. It would be kind of like when a police officer asks you to be honest and everything will be ok, it won't be ok. Margarito is now in too deep, whether he knew or didn't know isn't the issue anymore, what is the issue is that it happened and with the history of Louie Resto and Billy Collins, something like this is a very serious offense.

I loved watching Margarito, he was one of those throw back fighters who came forward and asked who is "Mas Macho". His chin is granite, even the loss he suffered vs Mosley, most men wouldn't have lasted 4 rounds with the bombs he was taking. His chin is made from the same substance those ancient pyramids were made of thousands of years ago in the jungles of Mexico, unfortunately the substance found in his wraps that night might also.

Margarito doesn't deserve a fight with Pacquaio. He might not even deserve to fight in this sport ever again. He will never confess, whether he knew or not and he may never get his license ever again. Truth is, he will fight again, out of country most likely or in Texas, which might be the same thing considering the rules in Texas. That fight will happen most likely against Manny Pacquaio on November 13th, either in Texas or somewhere else, some say the Middle East. The biggest injustice in all of this, is the man that truly deserves the fight with Pacquaio is a true great and Mexican legend in Juan Manuel Marquez. A man of nothing but integrity and honor and has achieved everything through hard work and learned skill.

That night in the Staples Center on January 24th, 2009 vs Shane Mosley was the beginning of the end of a great warrior. I know some people hold a lot of disdain and hatred for Margarito and justifiably so. I feel more sadness, sadness not for Margarito but for the fans. Because those are the real people that were cheated in all of this. A sport that is already viewed as corrupt and then another scandal like this happens, it's hard to handle. Especially when one of the would be great and exciting fighters that we need so much, fails not only himself but the people that supported him for so long.

Good article. I still don't really know what to think of all this but I agree with the writer in that he doesn't deserve to fight Pacquiao. Not at this point.

I was more saying that if anyone deserves that fight it's JMM.

Nice article. The emboldened part is why I am not convinced that margachito was unaware of what his trainer was doing. I think he did know, but as the writer mentioned, he is in too deep to change his testimony now.

I liked the article. It is a shame that one of the more entertaining and best welterweights of the last six years or so will forever have that cloud over his career.

We honestly don't know if he was doing this for a long time, or if the Mosley fight was the first time, but many people will look down on everything he has ever done, and Margarito has no one to blame but himself.

Good article but to be honest Margarito is no warrior, the only reason he would come forward non stop is because of his confidence brought by his loaded gloves, he knew his opponents would soften up and when you're getting hit all over your body you can't throw solid punches anymore, therefore he gave everyone a false impression of his chin being granite...oh and about nobody lasting past 4 rounds of taking Mosley's bombs....Oscar De La Hoya took 24 rounds of bombs from a prime and super fast Sugar Shane, so there you go, Plasterito's chin was not as good as you say it is.

And I agree JMM deserves a 3rd Pac fight.

You basically put on words what I feel about all this. He was very impressive, I really admired him but I'm very disappointed now. JMM is my favorite Mexican fighter and he's a true warrior and he deserves that fight but as someone else posted he has no business above the 135 limit.
