EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: JEAN PASCAL
By G. Leon
"I've got my passport and I'm ready to invade America!"
GL: Cong**** on your victory. Can you give us some thoughts on your performance? "I think it was a good match. It was the best win of my life because I've always felt like I was one of the best in the world and now after this win, there's no doubt about that."
GL: Was there anything about Dawson that surprised you?
Jean Pascal: "He was honestly tougher than I thought. I knew he had speed, skills and good footwork. I knew he was smart, but he was tougher than I thought and he has a really good chin. He got hit with good shots and he got hurt, but he took them and finished the rounds."
GL: Some people believe Chad wasn't himself and wasn't throwing as many punches as he normally does. Obviously you feel the shots you were landing were the reason he wasn't punching, correct?
JP: "Absolutely. Not too many people see that, but that's exactly what happened. I was moving around and jumping in and he was respecting my power, so it became hard for him to punch."
GL: Were you hurt in the 11th round?
JP: "Not at all. He has a good punch. But I knew he was getting tired, so I was going to let him throw and get tired in that round and then I was going to finish very strong in the last round."
GL: At what point in the fight did you feel like you had him under control?
JP: "Like I was saying, by the third round I was in my rhythm, I was in control and I knew I was going to win the fight. I was throwing punches when I wanted to and when I wasn't, I was using my defense. I feel like I was in control for the whole fight."
GL: There's a rematch clause, but there's an interim bout allowed. Who do you want to make that fight against?
JP: "Honestly, anybody who wants to challenge me. I've known I was one of the best in the world since I was 16. Now I want to climb my way up to the top of the list."
GL: What was it like fighting such a big fight on HBO in front of your hometown fans?
JP: "It was a great feeling. I want to thank HBO for the opportunity and I'm ready to do it again anytime."
GL: HBO seems very interested in you fighting Lucian Bute. What do you think the chances of that happening are?
JP: "They know me. I like challenges and if he agrees to fight me, it will be a great fight."
GL: How does that great fight play out?
JP: "It would be a great technical fight and he's a great fighter, but I'm too strong for him."
GL: Strong enough to finish him in less than 12?
JP: "I guess so. (laughs)"
GL: When is the earliest we can expect you back in the ring?
JP: "I would like to fight in December, but I'm not sure yet. I would like to spend some time with my daughter. She's going back to school next week, then I'm probably going to go on vacation, come home and go back to the gym."
GL:: Cong**** again, closing thoughts?
JP: "I want to thank the fans, they are my foundation and this is only the beginning. I have my passport and I'm ready to invade America."
