  • Comments Thread For: CompuBox Stats: Dawson Not Busy Enough To Beat Pascal

WBC/IBO light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal’s power punching was the difference in the fight vs. 4-1 favorite Chad Dawson, who didn’t let his hands go enough, averaging just 40 punches thrown per round.

Not that I'm dis*****g the decision, but I don't get the emphasis on Dawson not letting his hands go enough - he actually threw (slightly) and landed more punches than did Pascal.

The strange thing is that the statement is actually true, just not in a way where it makes it relevant to the Compubox numbers.

      Interesting stats...

Dawson actually landed more punches in more rounds than Pascal, i.e., rounds 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 11?

Dawson actually threw 6 more punches than Pascal did all throughout the fight (436 vs. 430) and landed 20 more (134 vs. 114)?

While Pascal landed 13 more powerpunches (90 vs. Dawson's 77), Dawson landed 20 more jabs (134 vs. 114)?

Dawson was more accurate at 31% vs. Pascal's 27%?

And, in round 11, which was not seen through to its end, Pascal threw 15 and landed 4, one of which was a jab, while Dawson threw 59 and landed 18, only 4 of which was a jab?

      Interesting.

Just going off punches thrown, both fighters averaged 39 punches per round.

I can't help but think that might be wrong.

Dawson outlanded Pascal in 7 out of 11 rounds according to Boxingscene. Yet two judges had Pascal ahead 106-103 and the other had it 108-101. But if those punch stats are correct then you could argue that Dawson won.

I havent seen the fight but I think those punchstats may be incorrect.

            Power shots won it
Dawson outjabbed Pascal in every round, but the judges are going to notice the big hooks landing.

What I hate is when people say Kotelnik got robbed against Pascal because Kotelnik landed more(but threw about 700 less). Dawson landed more than Pascal but Pascal was busier. The busier fighter is always going to get the win. Especially if he's the champion. You have to outwork the champ, not the other way around.

By only like 6 punches. But you have to understand they were in Canada 6 punches more is not going to do much. Add the fact that Pascal landed 90 power punches(meaningful punches) to Dawson's 77 power punches.

Of course Dawson was busier and had a better landing percentage but, in the fight, who looked more effective? I'm a big Dawson fan but he should have done more. No worries, i'm pretty sure he'll bring his A game in the rematch. Bad Chad ain't staying like this.
