Comments Thread For: Angulo Fires Back on Turning Down $750K For Martinez

BoxingScene.com spoke to Alfredo "El Perro" Angulo about the recent buzz created by his allegedly turning down a fight with WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez. Angulo's manager Mike Criscio told BoxingScene's Lem Saterfield that he thought Angulo should have accepted the offer of $750,000 for the fight.

Checkmate. I knew that offer was bullshyt. Perro would never duck a fighter.

He had right to to turn this shyt down. How does the Mexican fighter not get a percentage of the live gate when the fight is in Cali??

This is why you should wait to hear the both sides. But if i know anything the damage is done. Instead of people looking at it in all angles they will claim he duked because they just want to see the fight.

$750,000 is compensation enough for a Martinez fight, If the fight wasnt taking place in the staple centre then Angulo wouldnt even be offered 500,000..

I think $750,000 after having only 20 professional fights and losing to Cintron is more than fair.

I can't totally blame him though, I think Martinez is a very bad match-up for him especially at this point in his career. Still, if he at least put a good effort performance against Martinez I'm sure people would still want to see him.

I think it is more than enought.
            1. He is getting 750,000.
            2. He is getting a title shot at a catchweight.
            3. Even if it was Bradley's fight does not mean anything. If he was in the undercard people would go and see him.

and just because Mexicans go to the fight does not mean that they are not rooting for La Maravilla

Am sure if he was fighting a NO-name boxer only a handful of mexican would turn up to see him, But because he would be fighting Martinez who also happen to be the Middleweight champion with the belt on the line etc they would turn out in their thousands, so it isnt just angulo selling the fight to the mexicans here.

Why does the source of the money matter? Why does he care so much about the gate? If he were given a cut of the gate, they would have offered him less than $750,000. You have to think of this in terms of opportunity cost. If were to fight someone else for $400,00 in his next fight, the opportunity cost of not fighting Martinez would be $350,000. And if he were to beat Martinez or at least did well, you can bet your ass he would make 1 million his next fight after Martinez.

I think this is a clear case of Angulo ducking.
