Comments Thread For: Ishe Smith on The Guerrero Loss, Moving Back To 154

Former Contender participant Ishe Smith speaks to BoxingScene.com about his recent loss to middleweight prospect Fernando Guerrero. "Sugar Shay" wasn't too happy with the way the referee handled the fight and also feels the judging was questionable. Smith touches on these subjects, moving back down to his natural weight of 154 pounds, and more in this exclusive interview. [Click Here To Read More]

Great article. The interviews like this that actually get some real insight into a fighters psyche are what worth 10 of the mudslinging about who did or did not negotiate.

By the way. That promoter/venue did smell fishy watching live. Close fight but really odd referee and judging.

He gave a really great account of hmself, that wasn't the Ishe Smith I'm used to seeing. So I was very impressed. Just that Ishe isn't being real here, he continued to hit Guerrero bellow the belt, on the tigh and hips. Guerrero who is known for coming on strong late was gassed. Guerrero would retaliate but only a few times.

Ishe Smith must have had a great training camp, I'd rather he stay at 160. He could have easily gotten the win against Guerrero and I think he's a lot better then most people think. I don't understand the move down to Jr MW. Personally, I thought he looked bigger then Guerrero.

Unbelievable?! What a hypocrite this guy is! He gives all the praises and graces and never once talks about the fact that he went into a fight with a game plan of delivering low blows in order to weaken and slow down the favored more athletic champion. I counted no less than 40 low blows with at least ten of those being straight cup shots. He was able to sway the Showtime commentary by dedicating the fight to Nick Charles which in turn swayed a lot of viewers who don't judge a fight for themselves. It is really sad that this is even controversial.

And as far as shots at the promoter, referee or commission. Ishe, do you realize that if there were any other capable referee in that ring with you that you would have been DQ'd? Do you understand that Ishe?

Further, if there were compubox numbers to show that Guerrero out landed Smith almost 3-1 for the fight there would be no discussion on this. Ishe, quit having fake class and Burton, if you are going to be a real journalist you should get both sides of the story before writing garbage.

Ishe is completely fake calling up Nick Charles the week of the fight. Why did he wait so long to call up Nick Charles as he has been battling cancer for a significant amount of time. Ishe waits until the week of the fight to call up Nick? Seems kind of like a political strategy to me and it worked by getting the Showtime announcers to clearly favor Ishe throughout the fight. Further, why doesn't anyone talk about his trainer (Eddie Mustapha Muhammad) stating between rounds "keep going behind the barn door" which in boxing terms is keep hitting Guerrero with low blows when the referee is not in view. Also, the over 40 low blows was nothing more than Ishe trying to cheat his way to a victory. Seems like Ishe is more fit for acting or politics than boxing.

i like ishe a lot(been a fan since the contender)....but he is a mental midget that will never live up to his full potential.....

i dont even see how he couldve won this fight(rounds wise...and i dont even care about guerrero...most of these new "stars" coming out are overrated).....even if you give him all close(which imo werent even that close)rounds, the best i could see it for ishe was a draw.....that said, i think ishe gave flashes that he couldve given an even better effort, thats what i hate about his fighting.....ishe has a lot of skill and is athletic enough to give anyone trouble.....but he needs to change his attitude....

Ishe is nothing more than a wanna be superstar that will never win at the next level. When he cites sparring with Floyd, Zab and Chad Dawson it just shows his insecurities that he wants to be someone that he clearly is not. Hard to have respect for someone that wears his religion on his sleeve, fights dirty fights, and is always full of excuses when he loses. Guerrero completely outworked Ishe in the fight. Part of Ishe's problem is that he has a sparring partner mentality.

A competent referee would have DQ'd Ishe by the 4th round of his fight with Guerrero due to his deliberate low blows and by pushing the referee twice in the same fight. By the way, Ishe fought dirty against Danny Jacobs in that fight last August and lost a point for hitting Jacobs behind the head after the bell. Hopefully, this is the last we ever have to see of the sore loser and dirty fighter, Ishe Smith. Nobody wants to hear from a guy that always has excuses.

Ishe Smith blasts Prize Fight Promotions but is it warranted?

Recently former Contender series one fighter Ishe Smith went on the record with boxingscene.com and blasted boxing promotional company Prize Fight Promotions. Back on July 16th, Smith came up short against rising middleweight contender Fernando Guerrero in Southaven, Mississippi. It was a nasty, rough fight that both fighters felt long after it was over with. During the fight, referee Randy Phillips took a point away from Smith for low blows, some of which Smith himself admitted were indeed low. During one of the rounds, the refere (Phillips) stopped the action and walked to the side of the ring and told Prize Fight head Brian Young to stop yelling at him. Young was screaming at Phillips to do something about the amount of low blows that his fighter was receiving. Is that such a bad thing? Is there a promoter in the country that doesn't do that for his fighter?

In Smith's interview with Boxingscene, he calls Prize Fight a "Two cent promoter" and blasted away about the referee and the judging. That's all well and fine, but the promoter does not control who judges the fight, and who referees the fight. Prize Fight has nothing to do with what referee or what judges are used during a fight. Secondly, Prize Fight Promotions is far from a "Two cent promoter". They have promoted one of the largest PPV fights in boxing history, Mike Tyson Vs Lennox Lewis. The outfit also brought along the successful Peterson brothers, and promoted Zab Judah, who under Prize Fight was given a world title shot against Miguel Cotto. Prize Fight is actually one of the best promotional companies in the country at moving fighters from nothing to contention. The company has been recognized by the NABO as their 2007 promoter of the year, and have sold out their Fight's at The Fitz shows for multiple years in a row.

This writer has been covering Prize Fight Promotions for many years now, and in all of my time covering them they have been nothing but a class act organization. I have interviewed their fighters for many years now as well, and not one time has anyone had a bad thing to say about them both on or off of the record. The proof is in the pudding when you look at this promotional outfit. Their fighters get world title shots. Their fighters are kept busy and their fighters stay with them, and it's all for a good reason. The company takes care of their own.
