While HBO is pushing for a rematch between WBC middleweight (160 pounds) champion Sergio Martinez and Paul Williams, promoter Gary Shaw said that he will not discuss potentially matching either unbeaten WBO junior middleweight (154 pounds) champ Sergei Dzinziruk or WBO interim junior middleweight titlist Alfredo Angulo (pictured above) with either of the two fighters.
Martinez, who was recently stripped of his WBC junior middleweight crown, lost a clash of middleweight non-title southpaws by disputed majority decision to Williams (39-1, 27 KOs). In a bout that was a candidate for Fight of the Year, both Williams and Martinez were floored in the first round.
A former three-time champion, Williams has campaigned as a welterweight (147 pounds), junior middleweight and middleweight.
"I said that I wouldn't discuss anything having to do with Angulo and Paul Williams or Sergio Martinez as long as HBO is in negotiations with both fighters and both promoters," said Shaw, who promotes both southpaw Dzinziruk (37-0, 23 knockouts) of Germany and Angulo (19-1, 16 KOs).
Dzinzuruk and Angulo are each coming off of knockout victories, but have nothing scheduled as of yet.
"I have no idea who their fighting next. I haven't really thought about it. It's only a week after Angulo's last fight. But there's a lot of different opponents out there. There's nobody I wouldn't fight with Angulo, and nobody I wouldn't fight with Sergei Dzinziruk," said Shaw.
"There's no one that I wouldn't fight with each of my fighters. They would fight any of the top 154-pounders in the world," said Shaw. "There are plenty of top fighters out there for me to fight. Anybody at 154 or at 160. The top fighters, I would fight with either Angulo or Dzinziruk (pictured at right)."
On the other hand, Shaw said that he would not consider matching Dzinziruk and Angulo, as Top Rank Promotions CEO Bob Arum has done, say, when Manny Pacquiao dethroned Miguel Cotto as WBO welterweight (147 pounds) champion, Pacquiao decisioned Joshua Clottey in his first defense or Cotto dethroned Yuri Foreman as WBA junior middleweight king.
All of the fighters above were Top Rank-promoted.
"No I wouldn't do that. I don't agree with that," said Shaw. "I mean, why would I preach to promoters about matching their fighters only against each other and then turn around and do my own fighters against one another? No, that's not something that I would do."
