Comments Thread For: Martinez vs Angulo: HBO Balks, Demand Paul Williams

Promoters Gary Shaw and Lou DiBella have expressed interest in matching WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez against Alfredo Angulo. Martinez is willing to move down to 154-155 pounds to face Angulo. Both promoters face a big problem in making that fight because HBO is standing their ground on making a rematch between Martinez and Paul Williams. [Click Here To Read More]

I can understand where HBO is coming from with this but come the heck on!! Martinez vs Angulo would be a great fight. Funny how HBO will do this to Martinez but not to Floyd or Pac. And what the heck is up with Pwill? Dude should know nobody wants to fight his linky behind at WW. If he does return to WW he needs to fight Clottey cause Clottey called him out a couple times. Honestly I think PWill doesn't want any parts of Martinez. Isn't Al Haymon managing this guy? He's doing a crappy job.

Angulo is not all that. Martinez decisions him comfortably. However, this fight is at the very least something interesting to watch. It's no Pwill rematch, but we have Williams to blame for that if he does not agree to 50/50.

That's the situation when "promoters" can't host their own ppv.
Top rank and GBP does their own ppv if hbo doesn't bite.
This is what arum meant when he said "free riders".

GBP doesnt do any PPV without HBO, Top rank and Don King are the only promotional outfit that put on independent PPV shows without waiting for HBO or showtime monies.

But back on the subject, I hope HBO continue to do something like this in the near future, Refuse Martinez and Pwill's fights until they fight each other, The only problem is they cannot do that to Pacquiao or Mayweather (Huge sellers).

But look at the numbers for the small-budget Top Rank and GBP PPV's. They are not exactly successful.

150k is like selling 1 million for those type of PPVs.

GBP just scheduled a ppv with mosley and mora without hbo.
But yea, they prolly aren't gonna earn any money with that.

It has always been top rank providing those independent ppv that sells (and sometimes not).

GBP did it once with Marquez vs Casamayor.

But Bob Arum does it all the time with crappy cards that no major network is understandably interested in. Even worst they are 40 bucks(that's a lot for such crap cards) and only sell less than 100k each. Last one sold 15k. Pathetic numbers.

Even Hopkins-Jones II(two 40 year olds who need to retire) sold more than those Latin Fury/Pinoy Power cards.
