  • Would you watch professional boxing if the fighters wore headgear?

I just read this story on *********.com...
Colombian bantamweight prospect Carlos Meza passed away Tuesday afternoon at the Santo Tomas Hospital in Panama City, Panama. Meza suffered a cerebral hematoma and massive hemorrhage, cerebral hernia and edema, after being knocked out by world ranked Panamanian Ricardo Cordoba on Friday night in Colon City, Panama. The previously undefeated Meza (8-0, 7 KOs) put Cordoba down in round four of their Fedelatin fight, then traded punches with "El Maestrito" until the 12th and final round when a powerful combination sent him to the canvas and later to the nearest hospital. Meza's condition worsened yesterday as he was declared brain dead and went into an irreversible coma. "Sadly, Meza passed away," confirmed Panama Boxing Commission president Miguel Prado. Meza would have turned 27 on December 24.
Would you watch boxing if they wore modified headgear. Nothing protecting the face or chin, just something to cushion the blows to the head???

    HeadGear

Boxing isn't a soft sport, it's the most physically intense competition on the planet, these guys get paid millions to get knocked in the head, possible fatalities are a part of what comes with those millions, these guys choose to box, nobody forces them to do it, so if they can't take the heat then they gotta get their a$$ outta the kitchen. I don't see Ali or Frazier complaining about their post-boxing injuries. Those injuries made them LEGENDS. Would we be kissing the ground Ali walks on if he were still speaking fluently? HECK NO, we'd be criticizing him for being a selfish egotistical maniac. But now that he's got pugilistic dimentia (on top of Parkinson's), he's a world-renowned hero. And it's because of his injuries, and what he sacrificed in the ring, and his current condition, that has made him a legend. So to answer your question, if pro boxers wore headgear, we wouldn't have legends to look up to. YOUR THOUGHTS!!! - SacTown1

prolly only when i knew a devestaing body puncher was goin to be fightin
it would really take away from the thrill of them layin their lives on the line
not to say it makes them 100%safe
but it def adds a bit of pussieness to the sport
      specially in da pros

I love the sport of boxing and I love seeing people get knocked out, but I really thought roy jones was dead when he got hit in the head. I fell like bust a mutha****as body and face up all day but the blows to the head seem a little crazy if it weren't for the gloves no one would even get hit in the head...to go along with what you said why don't they just take the gloves off to and make it a real blood sport?? I really don't have a comeback to what you have written, you summed it up pretty well, but I would like to add that all boxers don't get paid millions. The guy that just died was a 8 an 0 contender so I am pretty sure he died for a few grand...

I have a question for you? would you still have the same opinion if you see your favorite fighter dead from a blow to the head?

Terrible news. Sometimes incidents like this keep me away from following boxing for a while. I always come back though...

Gerald McClellan was one of my favorite fighters, and I've got all of the respect in the world for him and his abilities in the ring, and when Nigel Benn put him in a coma with excessive rabbit punching, I didn't blame Benn for one second, nor did I lose interest in the sport. It's a blood sport, you're absolutely right. But Gerald is where he is today because he did what he loved doing, which was boxing against the best competition in the world. So yes, I still love the KO, I love seeing guys get "stretched" as Prince Naseem used to say, and if there are fatalities along the way, so be it. Kids get killed every day crossing the street, does that mean we shouldn't give them shoes or let them go outside?

I don't think i would whatch boxing if the fighters wore headgear, i don't like the new olympic gloves which twists the hands so it's harder to get a knockout either. Boxing shouldn't be changed to becme softer, then it wouldn't be boxing.
