Physical distance has very little to do with this. Oakland and San Fransisco are only a few miles apart, and they couldn't be more different. The cultures are totally different, and the sports teams, while in different leagues, still tend to have a pretty fierce rivalry. The fact is, Ward won't be fighting in front of his fans. He'll be fighting in front of Dirrell's.
But that doesn't really mean that Dirrell is going to benefit from any "home cooking." The fans might be on his side, but we've seen American boxers get screwed in fights against other American boxers who were considered to be more marketable. Ward is the more marketable fighter right now, so any fixin' is likely to go his way.
That said, as one of Ward's hometown fans, I'll be beyond pissed if Ward gets a gift decision over Dirrell. If he's gonna win, it needs to be legit. Dirrell doesn't deserve to be screwed out of two fights, two titles, and the tournament itself.Comment
