While there are always people who will defend Mayweather, Larry does have a point. I'm all for Mayweather, but you have to wonder if the fact that Roger going to court has to do with the fight not being made. And while people may say, "Oh, Floyd's fought without his uncle before" or "Floyd never needs corner advice, all his uncle does is say 'keep boxing that motha*****' and 'keep runnin' that sh** up the middle.' He doesn't need anyone in his corner."
While the fact that he doesn't need anyone telling him advice is true, the same cannot be said for comfort. Boxers require physical as well as mental preparation, and going into the biggest fight of your career, you're going to want to be 100% ready and have no doubts or concerns; that means any pet peeves, superstitions, chemistry between people in camp, and everything must not go unfulfilled.
Do you really think Mayweather would go into a fight without his uncle Roger, given that is undoubtedly the biggest fight of the last 10-15 years?
For all it's worth, Maayweather has always been a supremely confident and terrific self-promoter, and you have to consider that Mayweather WILL not put his '0' on the line until everything he feels is in order. It's not like he's a brat, I've said it numerous times before on this site and I'll say it again (you can even check my post history):
Mayweather's huge selling point is not his fighting style, or the results he produces. The reason he does excellent ppv numbers is because he is a terrific trash-talker and no one's been able to shut his mouth (hence the '0'). People buy his fights to see him lose (I know my dad and brother do). Given Mayweather's new nickname "Money", it's apparent that making money is his main priority in the game, and here's the truth about Mayweather: MAYWEATHER CANNOT AFFORD TO LOSE BECAUSE HIS SALES WILL DECREASE DRAMATICALLY.
Do you think Mayweather will sell as he currently does if he loses to Pacquiao. Hell no! This is what's going to happen:
1. A huge number of ALT accounts are going to be made to make crude and gramatically incorrect and terribly punctuated remarks on here, ranging from "MYWTHR'S CRAP!! HAHAHAHAHA!" to "Long live Pacquiao, better than Robinson!...Bring on the Klitschkos!" and some of them will be serious.
2. An absurd amount of videos on youtube with bad music choices will show a looping replay for 3 minutes of Floyd's face when his decision loss is announced. Many will comment, all of them non-boxing fans who seem to know it all.
3. Mayweather, however impressive he looks after his loss (should he continue to fight) will not be able to garner the ppv sales that he once commanded, because a huge part of his sales come from those who want to see him lose. Even if Mayweather fights 5-6 times more, he won't sell as before. The ones who don't buy his fights will be satisfied with that single blemish in his career, and that's all they really want in the end.
Sheez, and people talk about why Mayweather guards that '0'.
Hey listen, this is what I love about boxing, there's always a new batch of excuses ready. IF MAYWEATHER BEATS PACQUIAO, expect a horde of people to comment on how Pacquiao was: past it, never good to begin with, a wild slugger, panics when he cuts, etc.
Let's hope the fight gets made and that credit is given where it is due when the victor is announced...
That's my post of the day, I'm beat...
