Larry Merchant says Floyd calls himself money but turning down the biggest paycheck

Los Angeles - During his visit to The Boxing Truth Radio, HBO broadcaster Larry Merchant displayed his dry classic wit when discussing the unwillingness of Floyd Mayweather Junior to sign a contact which would put him inside a ring against Manny Pacquiao this Fall.

Using Mayweather’s moniker of “Money” to poke fun at the former pound for pound champion’s decision to by-pass a Pacquiao fight for now, Merchant said the following, “He calls himself Money and he is being offered a fight that could make him more money than anyone has virtually ever made in this sport, you wonder what the real story is.”

Merchant continued to say, “If you fight twice a year, why cannot you enjoy your life the rest of the time.”

Merchant’s comments were directed towards Mayweather’s statement made to the Associated Press earlier Sunday which read, “I'm not really thinking about boxing right now. I'm just relaxing. I fought about 60 days ago, so I'm just enjoying myself, enjoying life, enjoying my family and enjoying my vacation. Like I said, I'm just supporting my family and relaxing. That's what I'm doing right now."

Merchant questioned why Mayweather won’t fight for a 40 million dollar payday, and one has to wonder if fear of Manny Pacquiao played into the equation.

When Mayweather said it's all about money, that was bull****. He took less money in a few fights to fight lesser opponents.

I can't defend this guy anymore, his actions are bizarre now. Just sign the contract and fight Manny!

In regards to what Larry said, it does seem very strange money Mayweather is turning down money. But this isnt really news.

He has been covering boxing since the 50's and you say what does he know? He knows more fighters and fighters history more than your brain matter can fathom. He is a historian, and knows when a fighter is ducking or avoiding a fight. He has covered boxing all his years as a boxing commentator he knows the ins and outs of boxing. It's like your grandpa talking about life experiences you should listen.. He is an old timer who has seen it all. Better believe it.

Money may is all about money.. But when he knows he can't deliver it's time go and cash out..

Well IMO he just lost another year of his quickness and agility. His ring smarts dipped slightly already. After all, he's older than Manny. Taxing Pac's ass won't perhaps be a reality a year after and there it goes down the drain again.

Floyd's not getting any younger, and all he'll ever win are fantasy fights moving forward if he doesn't show a little urgency.
