      Phenom Valero does it again!

      Monday, July 4 2005

      By Robert Coster

His name is Edwin Valero and his record could not be more perfect: 14-0, 14 KOs and all in the first round! The junior lightweight sensation, signed with Golden Boy Promotions and managed by Joel De La Hoya (Oscar´s dad), gave another exemple of his frightening punching power Friday night in Panama City, destroying in 1:21 the usually sturdy Esteban Morales (24-8-1), a boxer who had gone the distance with boxers like Juan Pablo Chacon, Collin Dunn (for the WBU title) and nine rounds with present WBA 130lb champ Vicente Mosquera (losing by DQ).

'Will he be taken past the first round?' seems to be the question that comes to mind whenever Valero steps in the ring. At the moment, the murderous southpaw puncher from Venezuela cannot fight in the United States due to a suspension by the NY Boxing Commission after Valero failed a brainscan test prior to a scheduled fight in the Big Apple. After being sidelined for over two years, Valero has fought twice in Latin American rings, both times showcasing his awesome power. There have been efforts to have the suspension overturned, which, if successful could give Golden Boy´s phenom the chance to showcase his talent once again in U.S. rings.
