  • what CATCHWEIGHT does is make a fight as fair as possible...catchweight fights is the closest thing you'll get to what fighting at a max weight limit used to be...if you was a welterweight, on fight nite you weighed no more than 147. nowdays people wanna make/struggle to make weight then fight 5lbs, 10lbs, 15lbs more than the max weight limit...catchweight somewhat puts a limit on this...so with that said, catchweight fight makes for a fair fight for both fighters, not just the guy needing to lose a pound or two, but the guy needing to add the weight as well.

But its a championship fight. Why should the champion have to defend at anything less than the maximum weight?

Respectfully, catchweights nowadays are bargaining chips. Rather than take on the most difficult fighter at a given weight, boxers use their drawing power to ask guys to come in less than they weigh. If you come in at X you can get y percentage of the purse.

Cotto Not afraid he should be he got pummelled/embarrassed/humiliated/defaced and castrated and beat into the canvas by a smaller boxer who destroyed him for the world to see. I would think he would have a little fear of getting destroyed again in a career ender. Just because Cotto beat a little talented ***ish rabbi doesn't erase the fact he has lost some big fights by wide margins.

its a championship fight yes, so cotto dont have to take this fight with pac with a catchweight if he dont want to, its his decision...if contracts says 152, only he knows if his body is ok with 152...so he either signs or dont sign the contract. if cotto signs to a catchweight, then why does anybody have to over react with him agreeing? besides, cotto didnt make 154 against yuri and cotto isnt a full fledge 154 yet, being that he only have 1 fight at 154, so having to come in at 151/152 wouldnt be a big deal as some people try to make it out to be.

funny to me to see people having such hard time getting over a catchweight fight with cotto at 154, but yet some of the same people wanna see pac fight paul williams since p williams is willing to come down 2 divisions to fight pac...that in itself is way more than a catchweight...just as bad as pac vs delahoya

whats worse...cotto shedding 1 or 2 lbs or paul williams coming down 2 divisions just like delahoya?

i think it did. he looked more ripped than usual, both in the fight and at the weigh in. if you look at the fight, the first thing he did when he entered the ring was drink water before the fight

i think he would've gotten beaten badly anyway, but cotto's a guy that struggles to make 147 as it is. he doesn't train as intensely as most boxer and likes to party it up several times per week

there's no point in putting him at 145 when you can KTFO cotto at 147. same with 154. cotto won't struggle making 150, so what's the need of fighting him at that weight class? jsut beat him up at 154 and snatch his title

exactly. since this is business, the top dog orders the smaller one around. he asked for 145 and cotto didn't say no, so he got ****ed up at 145 instead of 147

                  • While I do believe the catchweight thing works to Manny's advantage (and at this point it's pretty cheesy for him to ask for it), I think Miguel still likely gets pummeled here. Hate to say it as Cotto is one of my favorites, but there it is...

But then where else does he go to make this kind of money? I hate this aspect of the business. I get your point. If cotto is ok with it. If Sergio martinez is ok fighting at 155 for the 160lb title against floyd why am I not.

I don't like when the draw forces the champ down in weight as they move up. If you want the title fight for it like a man at that weight. There are few chances for a guy like Cotto to make real money. He's too good for most guys so the public and networks wont buy fights. As good as he is, as many tough fights as he had, the difference in him fighting manny and everyone else is prob $5-$8 mil. Manny, Bob and Cotto know this so manny and bob exploit it.

If manny wants an 8th championship in 8 div's fight at the div max. Don't use your drawing power as a bargaining chip. That is a *** b!tch move in my book.
