I sparred this football player from Baylor and he was gasping for air by the third round.I have had conversations with this personal trainer at my gym (good friend of mine). He played football (College and NFL), we always disagree on the same thing.
he says that Football players are some of the in the best shape athletes around (I think he is biased), I happen to think boxers are...And in my veiw, it's not even close.
A serious fighter, is damn near a machine! That is my veiw anyway.Comment

Football players are in pretty good shape i must admit. I had this college professor who used to play football for VA Tech and he had a Phd in Chemistry.I have had conversations with this personal trainer at my gym (good friend of mine). Anyway, he said he was doing some work for NASA and came in contact with some type of chemical, I forgot which, and he had tiny rip in his gloves and the chemical slightly made contact with his skin and apparently got absorbed into his blood stream, without his knowledge.
That night, he had heart palpitations and a heavy fever. He called his employer and they looked up what job he had done that day and told him to immediately go to the hospital. Once there, they told him that the chemical he got on his finger was super toxic and had he not been is such good condition at the time, he would have died. Actually they said it was a miracle he survived and 99% of people in his situation would have died and they attributed his survival to his level of cardiac fitness.
Not to say that football players are in better shape than boxers but I think they are in pretty good form. Throwing punches though takes a ton more energy than people think and I'd say boxing is one of the most physically demanding sports if not the most demanding. A while ago, there was this thing on ESPN that ranked all the sports and boxing was at the top of the list in terms of physical demands on the body.
Sorry for the long story but thought it was interesting and pertinent to what you were saying.Comment

My brother and I also played football, my brother at a very high level also. As with anything, if you are serious, you train year round.
My brotha now works in the prison system (CO), and he spoke of his time at the academy. Keep in mind my brother does not smoke or drink, and has kept himself in very good shape over the years. He still runs, and does stairs on a daily basis. He stated at the academy they did something called 2 minute fights...They would hit the pads for two minutes straight. He stated that he had never done any thing harder in his life. I told him "now you see how I felt"!!!
I guess it is not fair to say that "it is not even close", but the training I did for boxing was the hardest thing I have done in my life! Football, not so much.Last edited by HandSpeed303; 07-03-2010, 11:56 AM.Comment
