I was going to post this as a response to some anti-Calzaghe fool, but I also think this is one of many ways to revive the HW division for Americans. Any im sorry Eastern Euros on here, I love Wlad and Vitali and im sure you have nice countries, but an American audience is still very important in the boxing world. I suggest a 16 man tourney. Without Vitali and Wlad and winner gets Wlad.
Vitalis about to retire and what is Wlad doing right now? Fighting fights no one outside of Europe and his fans care about. Beating up percieved no names. Ask 10 Americans on the street who Eddie Chambers is, hell ask them to name one opponent of Wlad's in his history and I am guessing maybe 1 can answer you. Now in America come march ask 10 people what they think of any school in the 65 team tournament we have each year called March Madness, and I bet 8 or 9 can tell you something about their bracket and who they have. 7 or 8 of them probably do not even follow college basketball. Americans love tournaments, the big problem with the HW division is champs from far away and multiple ones at that. The solution is to have a 16 man hw tourney, single elimination, winner gets wlad, bill it as east vs. west and I guarantee people will watch.
Vitalis got Valuev left, Wlad's struggling to get his fights on American television, let alone have an American drop a dime to pay for it. He doesnt have to wait 2 years, there are plenty of people he could also fight. You do realize no one over here cares, and no one in Germany cares who he fights, they jsut want to see him fight.
Why did Arreola vs. Vitali do so well. 2 reasons, 1. Arreola was hyped by HBO. The opponent has to be the draw, Vitali and Wlad do not have the personality for that. 2. Vitali was billed as the HW champ.
Hell make it all for Vitali's belt that hes giving up. Again, Wlad's not doing anything now of any substance. The people who are paying to see him fight would pay to watch him fight Tyson Fury. There are maybe 10 people in the world who tuned into Wlad vs. Chambers because they wanted to see Eddie Chambers.
And reality shows work well. 24/7 is great. Americans love 2 things. Reality shows, and competitions where a champ is crowned. Combine the two and you reach an american audience and revive the premiere boxing division.
1. Start 16 man tourney
2. Put it on ESPN with each fight coming after a mini 1 hour 24/7 type build up.
3. Have the winner fight Wlad for Vitali's belt
And it doesnt even matter who the 16 are, just go down the ranking, ask people, if the finals wind up being Tua vs. Toney, who cares, Id watch that. Fact is, Vitali's done, and best case scenario is some young guy would win and beat Wlad or give him a fight, worst case scenario you add a bit more hype to Wlad and put a few more "names" out there.
