You have every right to believe what you want, but to mention Dempsey's loaded gloves as a factual occurrence (as opposed to your opinion) of a boxer putting a weight in his gloves does not hold much water.
It would be like if someone started a thread asking if a boxer was ever proven to be drugged/poisoned in a fight and then me giving Foreman against Ali and Wladimir against Brewster as proven examples just because I believe it to be true (which I don't).Comment

what about ripped gloves from a punch. I remember the classic battle between Holyfield- Cooper, one of my favorite fights and favorite heavyweight battle ever. Anyone ever seen this a any other fight?Comment

Bouie Fischer claimed Trinidad's gloved hand was as heavy as a video camera before the Hopkins fight.
Why would he lie about that ****?

Originally posted by Kid AchillesDempsey never held anything but a clenched fist when he demolished Willard. Doc Kearns, his manager, lied and fabricated so many stories that his word was worth it's wait in snake**** by the time he started the loaded glove theories. First he claimed that Dempsey used plaster of paris, and then the iron bolt? When a guy can't even keep his story straight, it's a lie.
1. His former manager only started circulating those stories after he and Dempsey had a falling out.
2. Dempsey had his hands taped in plain view of Nat Fleisher and others and they all shot down the plaster of paris theory. He had his gloves put on in the ring in front of tens of thousands of people, and so there certainly wasn't any opportunity to do anything after they were wrapped.
3. The stories about Willard's busted ribs, broken cheek bone or eye socket, broken nose, missing teeth, broken jaw, etc. are all myths. He gave interviews after the fight, was able to talk perfectly and all of the witnesses who were actually there say that he didn't appear to have any serious injuries.Last edited by GOAT; 07-07-2005, 12:20 PM.Comment

Yep, Dempsey didn't have anything in his hand. The "legend" of the teeth sticking into a glove is from Jack Johnson v. Stanley Ketchel. Supposedly when Jack knocked Stan out some of Stan's teeth were sticking in Jack's glove. In film of the fight you can see Johnson brushing his gloves together after the KO, whether or not there were teeth present is up to debate.Comment

Jack Dempsey himself said in an interview with a reporter in 65' that he did dip his gauze in quik drying cement so that if the fight went long the sweet would harden them up. He said that it was something that he stopped doing after he fought Andy Malloy. He hurt malloy so bad that he couldnt ever fight again. Malloy said that it was the most solidest punches he ever felt. Dempsey admitted to holding his hands under his face when they applied water to his head so that it would drain onto his gloves.
But if you ask me, jack did all this **** way before he even started to become successful so it shouldnt be held against his later career accomplishments. He said he did it because after he lost to Jack Downey he was having a hard time knocking guys out that he felt he should have.
No ****! I love the guy but thats what he said.Comment

To people that say Jack held a piece of iron in his hand, these are the reasons why it could not possible be true.
1) the fight last 3 rounds with Willard not being able to come out at the start of the forth. I would like to think that is i was punching some one with an iron bolt, they would be knocked out well before the third. Let alone Jack Dempsey punching with an iron bolt.
2) Jack was using open hand parry in the start of the first round so he could not of had anything in his hand.
3) After the first knock down, in pictures taken you can see Jack holding on to the ropes with both his hand clenched around the ropes, therefore no iron bolt.
There was a link that discussed this and proved that it was indeed false.
They talked about the interviews with willard after the fight, and the fact that willard drove home with his wife after the fight (willard driving). To me that doesnt sound like someone with a broken jaw and a broken eye sockett in 12 places and 2 broken ribs.Comment

I remember seeing a photo of I think a British fighter taken a few years ago who fought abroad. He said the punches were the hardest thing he had ever felt, and curiously he had two perfectly cylindrical swellings, one on each side of his face! Big ****ers too!
