If he was American?
Would you rate/respect Calzaghe more

No I wouldn't.
Nationality doesn't matter one bit when it comes to my respect and rating about fighters.
If you do, then you should really reconsider your criteria for respecting fighters since it's just not right, it's a narrow minded way of thinking.
Who cares if the fighter is from Hawaii, Denmark, South Africa, Japan or Argentina - as long as he performs and steps in the ring and fights. What more can you really expect and how does nationality change that fact? When it comes down to it, all fighters are the same, in the end of the day they all have to step in the ring and prove themselves worthy. -
I would still think of him the same way.
As a very good fighter whose resume could've been better, and whose style was just too ugly for my preference.Comment

He gets slagged off for holding a belt in the uk for years but lots of fighters have no interest in taking the risk of relocating or even fighting too far from home and when they do they put in some miserable performances so i dont blame calzaghe for staying near home but i do think he should have added one or two more tough fights before retirement (dawson) but he didnt so he has to pay the price too. If he had beaten the young gun in dawson he would take the heat out of a lot of his slaggers, but he chose not to try to, pity that imo as it would have been a very interesting fightComment
