His name was Marciano and he was a boxer, of course he dealt with the mafia back then. Whether he wanted to or not. The Genovese crime family or whoever running around. Come on. Mafia guys love their italian fighters. And everybody loves the champ.

Yeah Marciano definitely preferred cash from anything I've seen or read. Is it really any surprise? He saw what the Us Gov't did to Joe Louis. And hey, if he knew how to evade taxes and get away with it, more power to him. **** taxes, they're bull****. The gov't does very little at all to help me. Why should they take so much money? They don't help you get your money, but they sure love helping you spend it. **** that, if I wanted someone else taking the money I worked to get, I'd get married.

Floyd Patterson. That guy was always severely shy and just kept himself to himself, retired from boxing and just locked himself away reading the Bible!

Great choice. Floyd may be the nicest and classiest man to ever win a title in any weightclass period. It's no wonder the press hated Liston so much for brutalizing him.

I think that if Floyd had the devil in him, he could of been the best HW ever.. but he did lack that bit of natural aggression. Because both Ali and Tyson have said that Patterson had faster hands than they ever had, I think he had darn good skill too (to say the least).

Not to mention underrated power. Have you ever seen film of the second Ingemar Johansson fight? Ingo was expected to be the big puncher in that matchup but Floyd nearly killed him with that left hook. The way his foot twitched as he lay there comatose will always stay with me. Patterson was a great guy but he had a wicked left hook when he wanted to let it rip.

If I remember there was a peach of a left hook earlier in the fight that put Johansson down too (almost put him through the ropes?). That second left hook later in the fight was just awesome, I mean the finisher, if I remember he let out just a quick left-handed body shot in close to set it up and then 'boom'. Then Floyd tried helping him up afterwards?

Floyd also had the Cus D'Amato style defence ofcourse, he really is an under-rated fighter! I think he may of froze out of fear against Liston, similar to Spinks/Tyson.

Just more rubbish from someone who doesn't like Marciano. As for the cash thing. Back then it was common for people to deal only in cash and hide it instead of putting it in a bank. Lots of people who grew up in the Depression or immeadiately thereafter did not trust banks. When dealing with boxing promoters and such, wouldn't YOU want cash? I'd never take a check from Don King or Bob Arum. Pretty shrewd and smart on The Rock's part. As far as being cheap, well yes and no. He didn't piss his money away like Tyson did but he did provide a very nice living for his family and could be generous to good causes.

To say Marciano was tied to the mob is like saying someone who gambled in Las Vegas in the '60's and '70's was tied to the mob. Vegas was controlled by the mob then and so was boxing back when Marciano was fighting. At that time a certain amount of respect was due to certain people. Just the way it was.

As for the day he died, to say he blew off a birthday party just to make a buck is slimy. He had a previous commitment that his family was aware of and was heading home asap when he died.
