As a businessman I can understand Arum putting Cotto against Margarito or Pacquiao because of ppv. But Chavez Jr? A fighter who has lived off his father's name and I believe that Chavez jr is not even a quarter of the fighter his father once was. Sadly, Arum may be right a lot of "casual" fans will buy into this fight simply because his father is the great Julio Cesar Chavez and because of the Mexican-Puerto Rican boxing Rivalry. Now a lot of fighters/promoters are using this excuse of fighters not being a "name" opponent and for that reason they won't fight them. I am strongly against this belief because the truth of the matter is that true fighters take on the biggest challenges available. We have seen throughout many years since the sport existed. The reason boxing was booming in the 70's and 80's was because everybody was fighting everybody that was anybody. We the fans are crippling the sport by saying things like "yea Martinez is not a name Cotto should not fight it is not worth the risk" So what? we will rather see Cotto fight the Foremans and the Chavez jrs. Pacquiao can very well win his 8th division title with a Cotto rematch. In history the story will be Pacquiao champion across 8 divisions. Really? he just fought the same guy only one division higher and he will indeed be 8 division champion if he happens to beat Cotto in a 154 division rematch there is no dis*****g that fact. But we are only fooling ourselves by saying that he truly fought a top guy at this division when we all know Williams and Martinez are the kingpins of the 154 pound division so as a result Pacquiao's accomplishment is rather empty and holds know true significance it lacks that aura of greatness. This is only an example that I am stating I don't know what Pacquiao will do I am not his manager. The point I am making that fighters become household names when they fight other already household name fighters and make a good showing. Let's be honest no body will give a crap about Martinez if he hadn't given Paul Williams that war. Martinez was supposed to be a substitute, merely an opponent. Since Pavlik's staph infection halted the fight. Martinez probably will still be in obscurity had Williams-Pavlik went according to plan. Martinez caught a lucky break he had the chance to prove his status in boxing and he did it well against Williams and he had a great follow up win with Pavlik. Martinez is not a name that is true but to continue to revive boxing we as fans must push for somebody like Martinez to become a name so that he too can fight another contender and make him a name and the cycle continues this is how boxing has lived so long. Mayweather became "real" star through the De La Hoya fight, Pacquiao through the Morales wins and Morales through the Barrera wars. Cotto became a name with the brutal Margarito fight and the Judah/Mosley fights. Nobody is born a name fighter. Fighters fight other name fighters to become name fighters. So yes we should push for Cotto-Martinez or what is the point of watching boxing if we see our beloved household names facing less than stellar competition come on now. All we will see is the same result with no drama our any true competition. I am quite tired of the mentioning of Mayweather and Pacquiao it is like the sport of boxing is hanging on their names when that is so much further from the truth. These guys are not bigger than boxing no fighter is no fighter ever will be. It is only fair for these guys to fight the best and nothing less. Instead of Williams or Martinez to fight Cotto we will give that opportunity to Chavez jr who in 40+ has not one solid contender, I mean come on while Martinez jumped to the middleweight division not to fight Sebastian Sylvester or Khoren Ghevor but the middleweight king himself Kelly Pavlik this is how we reward his success by denying him fights? Same can be said with many other fighters. I fully understand boxing is a business as well as a sport but we the fans have more power than all those promoters because they live off us the fans. We pay them by attending their events so yes we do have power and we should demand the best fights available. Sorry for the long post guys just wanted to make this point out there. All those names Arum mentioned are top rank fighters and not one of them is a top 154 pounder. Arum is a smart guy he is obviously protecting his investments and in the cheapest way possible and we should not buy into this because sooner or late bum fights is all we are going to see we as passionate followers of this sport deserve much better and that's real talk.

Only way Chavez Jr can draw better then Sergio is if its done somewhere that there's a huge Mexican population. Martinez vs Cotto will do just as good if not better on the east coast then Cotto vs Chavez Jr on the east coast. Arum ofcourse would never admit that.
Gate doesn't equate nearly as much as PPV sales and while their might be a solid gate from Cotto/Martinez the PPV numbers with Jr. would be at least 500k IMO. Chavez has a huge mexican fan base, it'll be Cotto's first fight against a Mexican since the Marg fight so they could milk that rivalry and its a relatively safe fight for Cotto with a ton of money. It also adds valuable time with the Stewart/Cotto combo, its a win/win situation for Arum. He still has Cotto as a huge draw, Marg can still be his mexican ***** instead of Jr. and Arum makes the most money he can without having Paquiao on the marquee.

Id like to see Cotto make a few easier defences before he jumps in with a dangerous fight, maybe against Chavez Jr.

We don't know if Cotto is demanding a ppv fight. Knowing Arum, he just threw that out there just 2 try and dismiss the other fighters who are better but lack a strong fan base. If Williams or Martinez fought under the Top Rank banner, he would be singing a different tune. Also if Chavez Jr wasn't under Arum, he would never even thought about mentioning him. He would be like who the hell has he ever fought??? And I think its sad that Chavez Jr even has a srong Mexican follwing. I know his pops was and is still the man in Mexico but Lil Julio is a horrible fighter.

For selfish reasons would rather have cotto/am 2 , just to see cotto have the opportunity to put together a full 12 rounds of outboxing him. And plus it was competitive.then I guess chavez to see Chavez get beat down and for his fans to further see he overrated.PAC /cotto, don't want to see that ,cotto D hasn't improved enough to fight PAC.it would be a replay of the first fight

I can't see what warrants a Pacquiao rematch, as he lost badly to him not too long ago... Margarito makes sense cause he can get revenge on his loss in '08 and also the suspect of him cheating, and I would see a JCC Jr. fight as a step down for him if anything.
