So who did throw in the towel?

My other question is, did the referee made the right call?

What if Yuri made one lucky punch, does team Cotto have the right to complain?

Please explain the rules of the fight if you have knowledge regarding different state rules.

That was a bad call by the ref, his corner threw in the towel and I understand why. The ref didn't want to see him lose in that way and wanted the fans to get a good fight, but it was dangerous for Foreman to continue to fight in that situation and yeah if Cotto somehow got knocked out it would have been a major dispute by his team. That was definitely the wrong call to make by the ref.

Foreman's trainer threw the towel. He even said so when the ref asked him after the round.

But under new york rules only the referee can stop the fight. so the towel was irrelevant.

yes but its already obvious that Yuri was limping from the injury, isn't not the right call from the trainer to stop it? For me that situation is dangerous to the fighter for letting them get a second chance.

Ok if that's in the WBA rule book then I stand corrected but I do believe all sanctioning organizations give the ref or corner the right to stop the fight. I think the issue maybe the fact that Foreman's corner threw a towel in the ring instead of waving it but either way they wanted to stop the fight.

The ref will probably never work for HBO again... how often does the ref get interviewed after the fight lol "it was thrown in the heat of the battle" and he didnt see any reason why the fight should be stopped.

                    I think both were right.

Trainer was looking out for the best interest of his fighter. If the injury was a lingering problem...he knew better than anyone besides foreman the severity of the knee injury. He was right to throw in the towel.

However the ref was also right in allowing the fight to continue. Only he could stop the fight. He didnt know who threw the towel...coulda been a prank from some idiot in the audience. He wanted to allow the champion every opportunity to keep his belt because it was obvious foreman wanted to continue, was able to continue. and was throwing back.
