Originally posted by YogiThat is true, and you can see that when they fight. Futch picked up on the fact that Ali dropped his right hand a bit every single time he threw a jab, and he got Norton to throw a jab every time Ali threw one.
Norton also fought smart when he was able to back Ali up with the jab, and instead of trying to head hunt when Ali was on the ropes, Norton concentrated more on going to the body and he did so effectively. Of course, Norton also landed plenty of right hands throughout their fights, and that ws also a useful weapon for him.
Is Norton overrated? Well, back in 1998 The Ring came up with a ranking of who they thought were the 50 greatest Heavyweights of all-time...Norton was slotted in the 22nd spot overall, so you can form your own opinion on that one.

Norton's chin kinda ******, you have to deduce that because there is really no other excuse since he did have good defence.Last edited by The Troll; 06-28-2005, 02:41 PM.Comment

Norton was kinda fascinating. He gave absolute hell to Holmes & Ali....but folded to the likes of Foreman & Shavers.
The belief is that Norton froze terribly against men he knew could hurt him.
He took punches from Jerry Quarry (who Norton carved up) & Quarry was a good puncher. But Quarry was not a fearsome hitter like Shavers, Foreman, or Cooney.
Norton wasn't overrated, because I don't hear people claiming he was any better than he was.Comment

Norton wasn't overated, he just came along at the wrong time. He fought not just one lucky, once in a lifetime fight with Ali, but 3 times he basically fought Ali to a draw. He just had the misfortune of being there with Foreman and Shavers. IMO, Norton would clean out the division today. He was that good and that's still not saying much.
By the by, if you ever get a chance to watch any of his fights with Ali or his fight with Holmes, I highly recommend it. Great BOXING matches. Very tactical fights, especially the Ali fights. Not knock down, drag out bloodbaths, just good, solid PROFESSIONAL PRIZEFIGHTERS.Comment

To deduce someone had a bum chin because they got KOed early by the two men who were arguably the hardest hitting heavyweights in history is not much of a logical debate... though I bet if Tyson was below 220 he would have been able to take those shots.Comment
