...were boxers who ducked no-one, had entertaining fights and often took risks in their careers?
James Toney, Antonio Margarito, Shane Mosley, Fernando Vargas and Evander Holyfield all match that description IMO.
I always felt that the boxers most likely to get involved in drugs or illegal wraps would be the ones who chose their opponents very carefully and who had an acute awareness of their failings. But instead the opposite seems to be true.
Some might argue that those boxers were so keen to face the best because their illegal advantage made them feel unbeatable. But I don't think that's the case. Toney was always fearless and had full belief in himself. Same goes for Holyfield. In fact I think it's their pure confidence and self-belief that makes both believe that can still beat the best even when it's clear that they are years past-prime. Vargas and Mosley took fights against very tough opponents when most boxers would've gone for an easier challenge. Margarito fought every top welterweight of the past few years other than Floyd, who turned him down.
