It's also used as a diversionary tactic either to create space between two bodies to set up takedowns or to start directing the opponent into a certain direction to open angles up for combos.l
It works in MMA because kicking is allowed. It's basically a fake kick, punch. People think the kick is comming and get punched instead, so it isn't as easy to see comming in MMA, as you people think.
In boxing, if you get hit with it. Then, I don't know what to say.Comment

It's not an effective punch that's why boxer's don't do it. First it telegraphs the punch and second punching while in the air is not that very efficient. You have to plant your feet to draw force from the ground transferring the force to your upper extremities. If your hanging on air, there's no firm ground to draw force from. Force generation will solely depend on your upper extremity muscles, which is a lot less compared with the combined force generated by the bigger lower extremity muscles.Comment

mayweather knocking out hatton would result if any boxer ever used that punch against a decent fighter, but it would just be even more brutal.Comment

I think so, that wouldn't work in Boxing anyway... the opponent would just pivot or side step with a counter and knock him down because he would already be off balance... that would be suicide in the ring.
Imagine if someone tried that on Floyd, that would be check hook heaven for him, or you could side step right and snap a rear hand in (if orthodox), or just pivot around and throw a rear hand or rear uppercut.Comment
