Look at today's top 10 p4p outside of the two best. You think those fighters were better than anyone around 20 years ago?

    Today's top 10 p4p:

    1. Manny Pacquiao
    2. Floyd Mayweather Jr.
    3. Juan Manuel Marquez
    4. Nonito Donaire
    5. Shane Mosley
    6. Chad Dawson
    7. Paul Williams
    8. Sergio Martinez
    9. Pongsaklek Wonjongkam
    10. Celestino Caballero

    Early 80's:

Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran, Aaron Pryor, Alexis Arguello, Larry Holmes, Michael Spinks, Salvador Sanchez, Wilfredo Gomez, Wilfred Benitez, etc.

A man who weighed 147 lbs 20 years ago is no smaller than a man who weighs 147 lbs today. The only division where fighters have gotten bigger is the heavyweights. It's also quite clear to me that Hector Camacho would still be about the fastest boxer today if he were in his prime now.

Both defenses are great. IMO, the only way to legitimately see who's defense is better is in the numbers. Both have boxed in the compubox era, those numbers would more accurately display who had the better defense.

Whoever's average opponent connection rate % is lower, has the better defense.

CompuBox is a bit of a joke to be honest. I'd rather trust my eyes rather than often flawed statistics. Going by statistics, Floyd Mayweather lost to Castillo.

In terms of who should win a fight, I suppose.

But in this case. How can it be a joke when all it shows is the number of connects or misses? The better defense would have gotten hit less, right?

It shows what people pressing buttons in the heat of the moment think are connects and misses. I've seen fights where a boxer supposedly took 100 punches yet was barely hit by a meaningful punch in my eyes. Watch Calzaghe-Hopkins for example.

              Key word there, "meaningful".

In this case, what is meaningful and what isn't, doesn't matter. Because defense is blocking and evading punches. In the topic of who's defense is better, all that matters is who got connected against less.

                  hey man.........

IT'S GOD-FR33 HERE FROM MKE. GREAT POST on WHITAKER/MAYWEATHER I just read. Your 100% correct! WHITAKER is in my top 5 to ever lace up gloves. He was a boxing GOD. I will give you green after I send this. Check out what I said........."For you guys who say that MAYWEATHER is a better defensive fighter than WHITAKER, HOW LONG HAVE YOU GUYS BEEN WATCHING BOXING? WHITAKER is the greatest defensive fighter EVER! PERIOD! WILLIE PEP is number 2, and MAYWEATHER is 3rd. WHITAKER was a boxing GOD and in my top 5 to ever lace up gloves. Would MAYWEATHER look this GOOD had he been fighting fighters in their primes? I DON'T THINK SO. IT was hard to hit WHITAKER anywhere. HEAD and BODY. He had BILLION-DOLLAR LEGS, whereas MAYWEATHER doesn't have the ebst legs. Never did. That's WHY it's easy to hit him to the body. He is also suceptable to a GOOD jab. He was quicker than WHITAKER, but WHITAKER was far the overall better fighter. He never LOSS once in his PRIME. You can't say that about MAYWEATHER because he hasn't fought A-LEVEL competition. It's like those who even mention KOBE BRYANT and MICHAEL JORDAN in the same sentence. THERE IS NO COMPARISON, and that's a whole nother conversation. I'M GOD-FR33 FROM MKE by the way."

                    Hey man.....

Hey. IT'S GOD-FR33 HERE FROM MKE. Just read your post. I agree with that and disagree. Here's why. I think it also boils down to LEVEL OF OPPOSITION. WHY has MAYWEATHER looked to be so great all these years? WHO HAS HE FOUGHT? AND WHEN DID HE FIGHT THEM? WHITAKER is the greatest defender who ever laced up gloves. Whoever started this thread hasn't been a REAL fan of the sport for long. I know that because he mentions MAYWEATHER'S name in the same breath as WHITAKER to be honest. WHITAKER defended against the very best of his era. He dodged noone. If the public thought someone was better, he called them out. MAYWEATHER is a good fighter, but he is not great. He's a hall of famer but not an all-time great. It's his own fought and that's as honest as I can be mate. He's smart about picking who he fights and when. Here's my post on it........"For you guys who say that MAYWEATHER is a better defensive fighter than WHITAKER, HOW LONG HAVE YOU GUYS BEEN WATCHING BOXING?
