  • Aaron Pryor really shouldn't comment on May/Pac

In what promoter Bob Arum nicknamed The Battle of The Champions, Pryor defeated Alexis Arguello by a technical knockout in 14 in front of an HBO audience. The fight was named Fight Of The Year and later the Fight Of The Decade by Ring Magazine.

The fight sparked controversy however, because Pryor's trainer, Panama Lewis, introduced a second water bottle which he described as "the bottle I mixed" after round 13. The boxing press which had been heavily 'promoted' by promoter Bob Arum to support Alexis Arguello, seized upon these few words to claim that Pryor's overwhelming knockout victory in this fight was undeserved. [1]

Adding to the controversy, the Florida State Boxing Commission administered a post-fight urine test which Pryor failed testing positive for steroids. [2] [3]

In 1983, after defending his crown against former WBC world champion Sang Hyun Kim (KO 3), Pryor defended against Arguello again, this time winning by a knockout in 10 rounds in Las Vegas on September 9, 1983, but again tested positive for steroids.

You have to watch those high output guys... usually, it's steroids...

Who is one of Floyd's all time favorite fighters? Yeah Aaron Pryor, he mentioned it... Who wants to "clean" boxing? quite contradictory that Floyd loves cheaters. He is full of **** just like you.

Actually this is the first time I hear that Pryor tested positive for BOTH fights. Legendary Nights doen't mention this... I think is strange.

Wiki dosn't mention a drug test.

And this article claims that there wasn't a drug test.

The backdrop to the fight was intriguing. Going into the fight, Pryor had an impressive and intimidating record of 31-0 with 29 stoppages. However, despite wresting his title from Colombian legend Antonio Cervantes and making six defences of the title against solid opposition, Pryor felt he had not received the recognition he deserved. His opponent on the other hand was one of the most highly regarded fighters of the day. Nicaraguan puncher Alexis Arguello had already wreaked havoc on his way to challenging for the Light-Welterweight Title having already held titles at Featherweight and Super-Featherweight prior to being the incumbent WBC Lightweight Champion having defeated Jim Watt in London the previous summer. Arguello was installed as a heavy betting favourite. Victory in front of his adopted hometown supporters on 12th November 1982 in Miami would enshrine Arguello in the annuls of boxing history for becoming the sports first four weight world champion. Unfortunately, for Arguello, the fight concluded with him lying helplessly on the mat being tended to. Whilst the win that should have propelled Pryor into the boxing elite was shrouded in the su****ion that the contents of the black bottle that Lewis had “mixed” contained a substance that revitalized The Hawk, giving him a boost which allowed him to pummel Arguello into a state of prostrate helplessness. The question marks were compounded due to the Florida State Boxing Commission failing to conduct a post-fight urine test on the victor.

If he did fail a drug test.

I'm pretty sure the victory would have been changed to a no-contest .

Is the thread starter really trying to compare panama lewis and Aaron Pryor to Pac Man and Freddie Roach?

Seriously how ***ing dumb can a person be?

He's a former pro boxer and has the right to his own opinion on who will win just like any other boxer who says Pacquiao will win. Question is wiil they give Mayweather his due credit after he beats Pacquiao? There's always a fighter that can beat Mayweather...but few people actually admit they were wrong and that Floyd shut them up. Instead they make an excuse as to why the fighter lost rather than why Floyd won.
