Giving Fighters The Credit They Deserve

"And they got the nerve to say I ain't fight nobody I just make them look like nobody..."-Roy Jones Jr.

Did anyone ever notice when these virtuoso type fighters have great dominating performances their opponents become bums right after the fight? Is it that their opponents are bums or is that they are so great they make the their opponents look like bums? For example Floyd Mayweather almost commited murder last night against Arturo Gatti and now people are saying well Gatti was nothing. SINCE WHEN? Just yesterday there were people saying how great Gatti is and how he had a chance. Its terrible because the great fighters never get respect when they perform great. The same thing was done to Roy Jones, he would beat guys with ease and then the critics said he didn't fight anyone. He faught who was there, just like Mayweather does at 140. The critics and fans are disrespectful to fighters at times. We have to give credit when credit is due...there are some scenerios where the guy obviously was a bum but that wasn't the case last night. Gatti was champ and was on a winning streak...give Floyd credit...

I agree with you on a couple of counts and disagree on one. First is that alot of time fighters do not get the due that they should be getting because their competition is too readily dismissed. Secondly, I also think that Mayweather's resume does not get the press that it deserves with names like Hernandez, Corley, Castillo and Corrales all in his win column. However, Gatti is not just a bum after the fight with Floyd, he was a bum before the fight with Floyd and everybody should realize this. This is not some shocking outcome-- this is exactly what was expected of Floyd.

Gatti is/was very overrated and I don't think there was really any hope for him. Nonetheless he's still a name on PBF's record and thats about it. It's not like everyone should just get on their knees and give Floyd a bundle of credit for beating some extremely tough opponent though...

Post-Toney, before all of Roy Jones' fights people always felt that he wasn't fighting anybody decent and it was true. He defended his IBF 168 title five times - three of which weren't even ranked in the top 10 at 168 at the time and another was just a 'blown-up' Lightweight. At 175, he avoided the Lineal Champion for 6-7 years. He is a disgrace to boxing.

It's not true that Jones Jr's opponents were seen as bums after he beat him, they were seen as bums before he beat them. The guy picked his opponents very carefully and was a good businessman.

I doubt I will ever be a Mayweather fan, but there's simply no denying his skill. I may hate him, but I think he is an amazing talent. He put on a show against Gatti.

Gatti is not a bum. He's a great entertaining fighter. He's not a top ten fighter, but that doesn't mean he's a bum. How many boxers are there in the world? They're not bums.

Gatti isn't even an overrated boxer. The only guy I've seen with Gatti in his p4p list is that guy from ESPN. He's just popular. Of course his fans are going to say he'll win every time he steps into the ring. But, really, Gatti is a perpetual underdog, because everyone that knows boxing knows when he steps into the ring with an elite fighter that he has a very very small chance of winning. And people love him because they know he'll go against the odds, and he'd die in the ring before he gave up. He's lucky he has a trainer to protect him. He's no bum. There's plenty to like about the guy.

I also agree with everything The Truth(Mayweatherfan) said.

Gatti's no bum but he's been considered over the hill since DLH. Just watch the interview with Mayweather where he is slurring his words, saying "shin" and not "chin". Mayweather beat a faded champion. I just hope Gatti retires soon.

I think the problem here is that these guys are looked at as the more skilled fighters. If they were to go in as the under dog and pull out a great win then it would be different. They are only doing what was expected and dont exceed the expectation.
Another thing is they do what they have to do to win even if its in way the fans dont like. They dont get the credit they deserve for their talent but that is the way it is and always will be.
Look at Gatti he gets into this crazy ass fights and pulls the fans, the media and the boxing experts with him.
This is the only way Gatti got this fight not cause he is as talented as Mayweather.Poor Hopkins took him years to get to get what he deserved a long time ago and got it beating easy guys at 160.

I'm not gonna take anything away from Mayweather...

but didn't he call Gatti a C level fighter?

He said it before the fight...
