Cant question the refs integrity or Benn's, but he was damn sure incompetent, a sick twist of fate when you think about it, on a night when McClellan needed a good ref to protect him he got a guy with no clue what he was doing, that could of been the difference between him not being in, in as bad a condition as he is in.

I agree but I also feel that if not Benn, someone else like Nunn may have hurt him.

Apparently Julian Jackson did a lot fo damage to his brain and he was a killer

Remember watching it live really well. Feeling overwhelmed and dazzled by the actual fight, and so saddened and scared by what happened to Gerald at the end. So sad.

one of the first fights i watched when started getting into boxing. it's a classic fight with an unfortunate ending.

i'm able to enjoy it, still. they put on a great show.

If not for the tragic ending, it would have been considered one of the greatest fights of all time. Awesome fight.

It's hard watching now because you know what happens, and there are little things you see like The G-Man wincing and blinking his eyes, having his mouth piece out his mouth and **** like that which obviously make it horrible to watch.

Also, the first round is so frustrating because of that completely incompetent ref, what an absolute joke he was.

That's how he fought, i watched the first Jackson fight recently and he was doing that **** with his mouth piece in that fight.

makes me sad everytime i see it, Gman is one of my favorites of all time. benn was a beast, i forgot how hard he hit having not watched any of his fight for a while.

the worst part of rewatching the fight, knowing what happens, is, listening to pacheaco call the fight when the Gman couldn't continue, calling him a coward and having no heart.

pacheaco never apologised from what i recall, i've hated him with a passion ever since. still do for that.

Pacheco is a piece of ****. He always seemed to be a jack ass but he took it to new levels on that Thrilla in Manila documentary.

The ref was crooked as hell (french ref), jumping in the way for no reason, but Benn is allowed 20 secs to return inside if anyone mentions that.

If u watch the fight, Benn is up by the count of 6, and the ref only stops McClellan for maybe 2 seconds before they continue.

According to the rules, a boxer is allowed 20 seconds if he is knocked through the ropes to get back in the ring.

McClellan by that time was exhausted and takes a knee. But not because he is hurt.



Benn held a big fund raiser for McClellan a few years ago that was attended by Benn, McClellan, Toney, Barkley, Steve Collins Hamed and Tyson couldnt make it because he was in rehab. Ali sent a letter.
I dont know how much they raised.

I think it was my friends brother who was 13 at the time.
