Why arent their great Puerto Rican-American boxers?

We have had Mexican-American boxers like Oscar De La Hoya, Fernando Vargas and now Victor Ortiz. But I dont think we have had great/famous Puerto Rican-American boxers despite there being a big Puerto Rican population in New York.

    How come?

There is still a boxing movement in PR, I don't know how big, or how great, or if it is in decline or not, but you still see young prospects coming up in local events. Cotto is doing his part for the sport, with PR boxing, helping up and comers etc.

I have no idea how many youngsters get into boxing in NY, how accessible gyms are, how much support or training they can get. It's an interesting question that merits possible research.

This is an important point, but aside from that I think he's wondering how come most of our boxers are born and raised on the island, and not from second and third generation PR's in the States.

Because nuyoricans are almost exclusively in basketball

          Carmelo Anthony
          JR Smith
          Renaldo Balkman

Not to mention current NT guys

PJ Ramos (he was born in PR but lived in New York)
          Larry Ayuso
          Carmelo Antronee
          Daniel Santiago

          And then there are prospects

          Michael Rosario
          Edwin Ubiles
          Kevin Young
          Chris Gaston
          Jiovanny Fontan

But back to boxing, there just isnt a great american-rican boxer to ever step foot in the face of the earth though many of our boxers trained in New York like Calderon and Benitez, Camacho and LaPorte.

They have a whole lot of good prospects comming up the ranks as we speak, you guys will see in the next 5 years. I think the sport of boxing is in kinda like in the rebuilding years. Alot of good prospects went the mma route for the quick money.

Yes Puerto Ricans are americans, now all we have to do is start speaking the language. Also John Ruiz is a PR american
