Roach tips Khan to emulate Pacquiao

Freddie Roach believes Amir Khan has the potential to be as successful as Manny Pacquiao.

Khan joined forces with Roach in 2008 after parting with Jorge Rubio following his defeat to Breidis Prescott. And it has proved to be a successful partnership, as Khan claimed the world title from Andreas Kotelnik in July 2009.

Khan takes on Paulie Malignaggi in the second defence of his WBA light-welterweight title at Madison Square Gardens on Saturday night, and his trainer, who also handles the seven-division champion Pacquiao, has noticed similarities between the pair.

"He reminds me of a young Manny Pacquiao when I first started working with him," said Roach. "A 21-year-old who is just kind of raw around the edges and just needs to be cleaned up a little bit. Maybe in eight years' time he will be pound-for-pound king.

"The work ethic is very similar, the speed and power. They're fast guys with a lot of power. There are a lot of similarities. Potentially he could be the best but we still have ways to go before we prove that."

As Khan prepares to step into the ring for the first time on American soil, the former Olympic silver medalist, who has sparred with the current WBO world welterweight champion, is flattered by Roach's comparisons.

"Freddie knows how hard I train and how hard Manny trains and even if I do half of what Manny has done in my career I will be happy gives you that push," he said.

No chance of Khan emulating Pac's style, not with his chin.

One more heavy defeat and Khan is done from the sport, he won't/don't have the heart to cope with another heavy defeat!

He will never be the same to himself untill he beats Prescott!

I mean if it was someone with a decent chin, maybe you can mold him into a better fighter but you can train to get a stronger chin, that's something you're born with.

It is indeed, but like I said above not only the chin, but his heart aswell, a young lad wanting an undefeated career that has already gone, but since his defeat he seem's different person not in the good way either that is to me anyway!

On about Khan I believe he will still beat Malignaggi easy! His strength will take him through this one because of Malignaggi's feather fist's!

The way he's acting right now outside of boxing really shows his true character. Khan hasn't even reached elite status and he's acting like he has the world at his finger tips.

Chin is not 100% born and 0% bred. Yes a big part of it is natural but also it can be trained and improved. Better conditioning results in a better chin.

Yes, chin is something that can be improved through training.

                    Here is a good start:

In England Khan was training and sparring against stiffs. Its my understand Khan wasn't really allowed to get hit. And that certainly showed in his fights, he was getting rocked left and right and eventually KO'd any time he was hit with a solid shot.

Once he came to Freddie Roach, everything is different. He trains and spars against the best fighters, big punchers and bigger guys. He spars with Pacquiao. He spars with Light Middleweights and Middleweights. He gets used to getting hit hard on a regular basis. That in itself toughens you up and come fight night, you get hit buy a puncher and it's noting because you're used to it.

Further there are various techniques you can do during training, such as working out your neck which acts as the punch absorber.

I'm not saying khan's chin will be "Fixed" but don't be surprised if Khan was a MUCH better chin then the Prescott days. it's about training, who you spar with, etc.
