Don't know why everyones bothered about ppv numbers. Pac and Floyd are the 2 biggest names in the sport. You know it, I know it. Put them 2gether and they'll do big numbers. Simple.
So Mayweather/Mosley failed to exceed Pacquiao/Cotto?

Thats sucks. Floyd is supposed to be the biggest draw. Mosley has had NUMEROUS PPV outings. I mean, this fight was promoted as the biggest fight the last couple of years. It was promoted as the biggest fight of the decade. A super SUPER fight. Schaefer said that this fight was the most heavily promoted fight in the history of Golden Boy. They were utilizing avenues which never had been used before to sell the fight. Not only that, Mosley and May are American fighters. 1.2 Millions is still great for boxing, but I have to admit. It does kind of worry me a little because this fight should have done much more than that. How many buys would it have done is Mosley never would have stepped into that ring to confront Floyd?
You can try to compare those numbers to Pac/Clottey, but lets be real. That fight didn't even have a 24/7. Only had 2 months of half ass promotion. Clottey doesn't even have a fan base. Yet it still managed to do 700K. If a comparison is going to be done, it has to be to Pac/Cotto. 1.5 million PPV buys. Pac/Cotto did 1.5 millions buys even though:
Floyd said Cotto was not a PPV attraction
The 24/7 was "boring"
2 non American fighters
After Mayweather/Pacquiao, we will not have any superfights for a very long time. Its going to be a very unsure time for Boxing. HBO needs to carefully use its budget to promote new fighters.Comment

There's nothing on the horizon for HBO to invest in.
NOTHING.
Pac's retiring very soon (50+ fights, GTFO here lol...)
Floyd's already retired once before.
Cotto's on his last lap and Marg's a fucking disgrace.
GBP started this mess by investing only in marquee fighters. When those
got old, there was bound to be this dry spell, where up-and-comers
haven't been developed enough to take over right away.Comment

DT – Shane Mosley pushed hard for a fight with the Ninja. Why did Manny decide to fight Cotto instead of Shane?
F Roach – It wasn’t Manny’s decision. It was my decision and the group’s decision. The main reason? We will make more than twice as much money fighting Cotto than Mosley.Comment

Not to mention all the prospects who get frequent undercard coverage on HBO like Jacobs and Korabov.
There has been an effort to usher in the new crowd but it's still developing. Stars (mostly) don't just spring up overnight.Comment

They tried to bring in Ortiz and now it seems they are giving Khan a chance. Top Rank are bringing Lopez and Gamboa through nicely.

Not overnight, definitely.
Of the names you threw out, only Gamboa shows promise from a
revenue-generation POV (Ortiz and Lopez have years of work ahead,
just to get their hype going again). How many years do you think it
would take to develop Jacobs?
This is why revenue-driven matchups are killing the sport.
When superstars only fight other superstars, there's no room for
developing the drawing-power of lesser fighters. Promoters will
always be matchmaking based on revenue.
The alphabets, for all their evils, ensure mandatories against ranked
up-and-comers, regardless of their marketability, and these otherwise
unheard of fighters benefit from the media exposure, if/when they win.
