Shannon Briggs, on the comeback trail...

After almost a two year hiatus, former WBO Champ Shannon Briggs is back. He fought once at the end of last year (resulted in a NC- guess why?), fought once this year, and per boxrec is scheduled to fight twice at the end of this month. The first fight in May will be against tomato can Dom Alexander and then he'll face tough journeyman veteran Rob Calloway...

That's pretty good isn't? I've always liked Shannon but his work ethic is *****e. My guess is, he's fighting a bum of the month hoping he gets a shot, and payday, at one of the KBros...

Calloway usually can tdke guys a few rounds but he's 209 & Briggs 260...at least he's active.he's had 2 fights already in 2010 & Alexander & Calloway next.if he gets under 260 I'll give him a 2nd look because anything over 270 & he's gassed after 5 & throws 10 punches/round.under 260 & his handspeed could actually surprise people...he does have the eraser with both hands! Time will tell.

Even in today's HW landscape, I can't see Briggs becoming a major factor. He had his chance after Liakhovich, but he faltered. His stamina problem will always hold him back. And he's older now too. Briggs can be fun to watch but he ain't going anywhere.

I heard firsthand from a poster here that Briggs is taking his conditioning serious. The poster stated that he saw Briggs in Miami jogging when he was on his way to work. I'm cautiously optimistic that Briggs will get himself into shape and be a factor in the division.

                Briggs jogging? I am skeptical.

While on the subject of Heavyweights with loads of potential who treat the sport like a hobby I should mention that Michael Grant is fighting this weekend.

These two should match up and see if either one has anything left.

Yeah, it looks like he's going to beat a lot of journeymen like before, then get one last shot at a title. He's saying he wants to cut another 20lbs. If he really did come in to fight in the 240s and was in any way serious about his conditioning, then he would be very dangerous.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Any news about Briggs? I hope he steps up his level of comp. I think if he beats some good opponents, he's a viable opponent for Wlad next year...
