The proof is in the pudding. Not starting anything here but realistically in their last two fights you can see what is what.
Pac fought Clottey, a virtual unknown to the general public and still does nearly 900K sales. Mind you, there was no 24/7 to promote it and it got little publicity outside of the Top Rank PPV cards which advertised the bout during the airings.
Mayweather fought Mosley, two big, big names and had a 24/7 and tremendous advertising. It was thought that this fight could potentially crush the all time PPV sales record amassing as much as 4 million buys as quoted by Schaefer. The estimate is like 1.25 million sales or somewhere in that region, good but no more than Mayweather did against JMM back in August.
In that fight, you had the 24/7, return of Money May, and the huge Hispanic following rooting for Marquez which brought in the buys not to mention the extended time for promoting that fight after the Money injury.
So the Money/Mosley fight does 1.25 million to Pac/Clottey doing 0.900 million.1.25/0.900 = 1.39 or 139% of the sales that Pac/Clottey did. The bigger names, 24/7, and extensive promoting amounted to an additional 39% in PPV buys. This, to me, is not such a significant advantage considering the magnitude of each event, respectively- considering some thought this would be the highest grossing fight of all time.
I just hope the fight we all want to see comes to fruition and there are no snags from either guy.
