Funny that you mention Cotto, because he's the exact reason why Gomez only fights old, blown up and washed up fighters. First Gatti, then Castillo and now Witter?

He did fight Soto Karass.
He was winning but was beggining to get caught when a head butt happened and he won on the cards.

Gatti was given a list of acceptable options from HBO as to who he could fight that they would televise, he picked Gomez because he thought Gomez was a crude brawler type that was slow without much power that he could outbox. Gomez was not favored going into the fight.
Castillo fought Gomez because Top Rank wanted to put the two in a crossroads fight position. If Gomez won, then he moves on to better things and Castillo gets a last payday. If Castillo had won, he probably had enough name value left off a decent win to get a big fight.
If Gomez fights Witter, it will be because the WBC ordered it as an eliminator bout.
There's no reason to hate on Gomez for fighting these guys when he wasn't even responsible for making the fights, wasn't favored against Gatti, and the Witter fight is still just a rumor at this point. And Gomez did get a solid win over Soto-Karass and fought a prime Cotto under less than optimal circumstances with a right fist he couldn't close and a severe illness in the middle of his training camp.
As to Gomez-Alvarez, offensively Alvarez impressed me with his accuracy and punch variety against Jose Cotto, but as he struggled to put away a career Lightweight he had every advantage on except experience, I question how for real his power is. He's also not a very busy fighter on offense. Defensively, he's not a sitting duck but he does have liabilities and got rocked by said career Lightweight, so I question his chin against real Welterweight competition. Like warp, I think it's too soon for Alvarez against Gomez, and Alvarez needs a few more step-up fights before facing someone like Gomez. Matthew Hatton and/or David Estrada would both be decent for that.
