"Caught cold": Why do boxing fans say this?

I'll present 5 examples

Jones vs. Tarver II: Roy Gets KO'd by a nasty left hand punch and no one says he was caught cold.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Ricky Hatton: Hatton is KO'd in the second round by a nasty right hand and no one says he was caught cold.

Williams-Quintana II: Williams catches Quintana with a left hand and stuns him then Williams keeps the pressure on him and beats him senseless. Then everyone says Quintana was caught cold.

Valero has I dont know how many First Round KO's so he caught everybody cold?

Mike Tyson caught everyone cold?

So why do people say that for Paul Williams? The caught cold thing needs to die on here.

caught cold as I always understood it was getting knocked out early. Basically, not being prepared or getting a fight you didn't expect to get. If you get KO'd in the first 2 rounds in a big fight, chances are you were in for a rude awakening.

it's also a way of saying you didn't warm up properly, but that simply doesn't happen in big, big fights.

doesn't apply to Tyson fights expect probably the Spinks one. Once you know he is a first round warpath, the excuse of getting caught cold goes out the window.

IMO Being caught cold is when you get KTFO, your out, as in the dude is not consious anymore, like Hatton Pacquiao. I wouldn't say Quintana was caught cold by williams

for the record, I think Hatton got caught cold in that first round. Nobody had ever jacked his **** up like that early in a fight. I don't think Roy got caught cold because he had a great first round against Tarver. It's more like when things are just going along as you would expect rounds 1 and 2 to go, the better boxer doing his thing, then bam, you are getting your **** tossed.

I do think Quintana got cold. I don't think it made any difference. Williams was going to destroy him that night sooner or later.

Examples of being caught cold would be the ones which put Joe Calzaghe down in the first round vs Bhop and Jones imo, he took much more harder punches later on from both.. even leaving his chin out for Jones and being tagged at points.
