    Miguel Cotto Stops Mohammed Abdulaev

11.06.05 - By Karen Belford: WBO super lightweight champion Miquel Cotto did what he had to do in winning a ninth round TKO over Mohammed Abdulaev on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden in New York. For the most part, the fight was anything but pretty for both fighters, with Cotto running around the ring, trying to avoid the fierce inside fighting from Abdullaev, who appeared to still have Cotto’s number early on in the bout.. However, that all changed in the 6th round, when Cotto landed a hard right to Abdullaev’s right eye that put a huge welt over his eye, which later on caused Abdullaev (15-2) to quit in the 9th round of the fight, after complaining he could no longer see out of his right eye. At the time, Cotto was ahead on all three scorecards, 78-74, 79-73 and 79-73. The win for Cotto avenged his loss to Abdullaev in the 2000 Olympics.

Nevertheless, for all the hype about Cotto, he didn’t look like a world beater out there, especially with his retreating boxing style. I don't know, but for me, Cotto looked more like a pretender, than the next great light, especially the way he ws being handled by Abdullaev prior to his injury to his eye. Honestly, after having witnessed the multi-talented Tszyu and Hatton go at recently, Cotto looks like a child compared to either one of them. He's just not at their level, in my opinion and I don't see how he could ever progress to their level, but we'll see, won't we? There's talk of Cotto meeting up with Hatton, possibly early next year. That being said, I wouldn’t blame him if he decides not to take a bout with Hatton, since at this point in time, Hatton's aggressive, forward attack style offense, would likely smother Cotto and give him fits.

This writer is a piece of **** ESB rookie. She cant event spell Mohamad Abdullaev's name correct in the entire article. Great editing job by their staff. Eye injury??? Cotto pounded his ****ing head in, that's how his eye got injured. Cotto hits like a truck, Adbullaev was at one time the top prospect in the division. With the exceotion of Tszyu, Cotto has faced better competition then Hatton. N'dou is tougher then any fighter Hatton faced, other then Tszyu. Same could be said for Abdullaev.

Man, this reporter seems to be an idiot. Not because he doesn't like Cotto but because his knowlage of boxing isn't up to par.

"with Cotto running around the ring, trying to avoid the fierce inside fighting from Abdullaev"

Ummmmm, isn't that what you are supposed to do against a guy that likes to fight inside? Cotto weathered the storm, fought back and won a convincing and solid win.

interesting i thought the same thing you did. so in otherwords he doesn't like most fighters out there. lets look at pbf. i'd say he does the same thing. b-hop, same thing. countless others. i'm not saying i think cotto is at the level of some of the top fighters in the division but he is definately on the verge. he faught a very smart fight. he adjusted to abdullaevs style and won the fight. i think it was an excellent show of maturing in the ring.

Cotto was a smart fighter and he showed that with that win over abdullaev. abdullaev was doing well in the first 3 rounds but cotto finally got his rhythmn and hit abdullaev with some solid shots and that was it, even if there wasn't any injury on abdullaev's eye, it was very clear he was losing that fight so it will be the same story, cotto still wins. during the post-interview he said he wants to fight DLH. in my honest opinion he could beat oscar! that is if the latter wants to fight him, but that's the question, oscar will not be that ****** fighting him.

That's coz Oscar had never been known to do that before so expectations were for a war. But his hit and run tactic surprised many, including DLH fans, until he just did "run" in the last three rounds.

Not only did DLH lose the fight, but he lost a lot of his own fans as well. It's not just Puerto Ricans that say that.
