Since when is it OK to QUIT?!?!

Boxing has been my favorite sport for over 10 years now, based on the heart, determination, courage, and pride that pro fighters exhibit in the ring. The 90's wasn't exactly a golden era of boxing, but guys like Holyfield, DeLaHoya, and Finito Lopez exhibited the traits that I was talking about....

Nowadays, on nearly every big fight card, somebody quits. WHAT THE F#@%????? Since when is quitting acceptable? Where's the heart? Courage? Where's the freakin' cojones?

I believe we need to categorize fighters a little more accurately in this new age of boxing. Forget about weight classes, experience level, quality of opposition. There's only 2 things I want to know about fighters now: Are you a WARRIOR, or a QUITTER?

Here's a tentative list, in no particular order.... feel free to add/subtract/modify:

QUITTERS: Tyson, Tszyu, Abdullaev, both Quitschko's, Freitas, Golota

WARRIORS: Gatti, Mayweather, Corrales, JL Castillo, Judah, DeLaHoya, Barrera, Morales, Pacquaio, Winky, Margarito, Johnson, Tarver, Hopkins

In Tyson's case I think he did the right thing, he knew he wasn't going to win at that point and didn't want to get pumbled by Mcbride.

How are Mayweather and Judah warriors when they're rarely ever even hit?

Well then he shouldn't have entered the ring in the 1st place, if he wasn't determined to fight hard for 10 rounds....personally I can never justify somebody quitting, for any reason, up to and including death, boxing is the hurt business, fight back or don't bother showin' up!

Gatti had 2 swollen eyes vs. Wilson Rodriguez, golly what kind of moron would fight thru that? Oh yeah, a WARRIOR would, because that's his job

Good defense doesn't make you any less of a warrior, it makes you smarter than your opponent....Mayweather beat Hernandez with a broken hand.....Judah nearly got KO'd by Millett and came back to win big

no doubt, it's easy to call balls & strikes from the center field bleachers.....but for $6 mil plus, I'll die before I quit, Mike just isn't a warrior, he's a quitter, that doesn't take away from his accomplishments from 2 decades ago, but he's no less of a quitter....Mike was a bad dude, when I was in about 3rd grade, a lot of things change in 15-20 years, Tyson has been an entertainer disguised as a pro boxer for nearly a decade now, I'm just happy i didn't pay $50 to see someone dishonor themself & their sport

It became ok to quit when fighters had families, lives and serious injuries were proven to be a result of punches. Get over it, its not their job to die or even suffer anything more than minor/aesthetic injury entertaining you

In Tyson's case it sounded like he just wanted that last paycheck (at least he is honest about it)...I had a harded time with Tszyu quitting but maybe it was the same thing....just didn't want to get bashed about any longer and knew he was getting paid anyway...I admit that I really hate seeing this but the fighters should feel like they can quit instead of staying in there till they are really hurt...the reason I had more trouble with Tszyu's quit is it didn't really look like he was hurt or close to being ko'd or anything, just looked like he lost the will to continue...Tyson sounded like he just wanted to get paid and when he saw it was going to be a tough fight, he just gave up (based on some of his antics in the final round he should be happy that Tyson quit rather than freak out doing something illegal, which was where the fight was headed)...Abdullaev had a closed eye and probably would have been knocked out at some point...he did the smart thing really...it is hard to watch though and having three quits in three big fights is a real bummer when you're expecting a good fight
