Mosley is number one. If Floyd beats him he becomes number one. It's quite simple. You become the man when you beat the man.

Not necessary when we are talking about rankings. It doesn't work that way.

Being RANKED #! does not make you champ, there is the CHAMP(the man) and there the RANKINGS. You don't have to lose to be RANKED #1, and you don't have to beat the #1 guy to get RANKED #1.

However, to be the champ(the man) you have to beat the champ(the man). Or if there is no champ and is vacant then the two ranked fighters or in some instance the #1 guy vs the #3 guy will have a box off for the right to be called champ

I'm not going to pretend to know how the Ring ranks these fighters right now. I know Cotto was considered the best after after Floyd left pretty much, Margarito beating Cotto made Margarito the recognized best, and Mosley beating Margarito made Mosley the recognized best. Whoever wins between Mosley and Mayweather should be the clear number one welterweight.

But, the Ring has Pac as #1 right now.. Pac didn't beat the #1 guy there.

Why IMO Shane won the lineal title was cuz of Marg was ranked #1, Cotto #2, and Shane #2. Marg already had beaten Cotto and was fighting the #3 guy so that was for the vacant lineal title. The Ring just dropped the ball there like so many other times. Shane won he is the lineal champ.
