The Mayweather fight aside.. Why does a big time fighter like Pacquiao still need a promoter? Every single fighter at this stage or height of their career would go it alone for the final part of their career.

Manny Pacquiao needs to ditch Bob Arum

By Stacey Taylor:Over the last several years, Floyd Mayweather Jr has gained a reputation of avoiding dangerous fighters in pursuit of the fights that make more sense financially. In the lighter divisions, Mayweather fought and beat the best. He defeated the late Diego Corrales at super-featherweight and Jose Luis Castillo at lightweight (twice).

As Mayweather moved up in weight he opted to fight more popular fighters, rather than more worthy opponents. Arturo Gatti, Ricky Hatton and Oscar De La Hoya, all had a massive followings that would have filled any arena. Mayweather chose to fight the aforementioned while ignoring the legitimate challengers in his own division like Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito.

The fighters himself is all too aware of this perception and it sits easy with him as he watches his bank balance grow, and who can blame him.

Then we have Many Pacquiao, the people’s champion, a fighter fighting for a nation who projects the impression he would fight anyone. Up to this point, no-one has really questioned the Filipinos resume, after all, he defeated the Mexican trio of Barrera, Morales, and Marquez, names already cemented into the sports history.
However if you look a little deeper you will discover Pacquiao also fought Ricky Hatton and Oscar De La Hoya, furthermore he fought both after Mayweather, so if they were damaged goods when Mayweather shared a ring with them they have been in further decline when Pacquiao faced them.

Then we dissect Pacquiao’s record further to discover it’s becoming more frequent him sharing a ring with fighters promoted by Top Rank and Bob Arum, who also promotes Pacquiao.

Now as the world awaits a Pacquiao – Mayweather showdown Bob Arum has been pointing his radar towards Mexican Antonio Margarito, and yes, you guessed another Arum fighter. Margarito has been inactive for over a year due to his year-long suspension from the sport. In his last bout before his suspension he succumbs to the pressure of Shane Mosley and was stopped in the ninth round. So where is the sense in matching Pacquiao with Margarito.
In truth, there is only one welterweight fight we all want to see and that’s Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr.

It’s my belief the Filipino’s promoter does not want to gamble his main asset on a Mayweather bout, and would rather serve his own best interest by putting the Filipino in the ring with yet another Top Rank fighter. Pacquiao vs. Clottey we had the Cowboys stadium as a smokescreen, it was the event we all looked forward to and not the fight, and for good reason as the fight played out the way we all knew it would. Arum stood on the podium at the Cowboy’s stadium and told us boxing was entering a new era, and it would be he who dawned the era of big-time boxing taking place in football stadiums. How’s about dawning a new era of getting the fights made we all want to see.

A Pacquiao fight is good for Mayweather and will provide the American with the perfect platform to silence the critics, or at least some. Mayweather will always have detractors, it comes as part of the deal when you posses a talent and are as outspoken and confident as he.

A Mayweather fight is good for Pacquiao as if victorious he will surely harden his already cemented legacy. There would be no doubt whose head the pound for pound crown sat atop if Pacquiao was to defeat Mayweather.

Together Pacquiao-Mayweather they spell disaster to Bob Arum who could see his main earner plummet in worth were he to lose.
I think you are talking nonsense. Arum has done wonders for manny P's reputatuuon, make him a universal icon, one of the wealthiest men in the Philippines, encouraged his after boxing life in politics, and, in any emergency, was reliable and could be depended on.

That he was able to arrange fights between his own fighters, shows his versatility, and never more so that when he was immediately able to come up with a reputable opponent in Clotty, which really showed Mayweather and cohorts, that the world did NOT revolve around them.

Some people, mostly fans (fanatics) supporters, self-styled experts, (armchair experts) half-illiterate posters, are NEVER SATISFIED.........

I don't think that Arum cares one little bit, he will be remembered as one of the very top promoters of all time.

yeah, his reason is that he's spooked.

If he would have said yes the fight would have occured.
the fight would've occured if floyd wasn't spooked

ain't you the loud mouth that was sucking on floyd's nuts? just kidding dude

anyways, floyd had to accept 50/50 because HBO probably forced him to. if the random blood test didn't' ruin the fight, floyd would've found something else. floyd is an expert of finding ways to avoid tough fights.

                .
I don't even want to discuss this **** with you, as your feelings on Floyd are well known.

All I have to say if Manny said yes the fight would already be part of boxing lore and Floyd would not have been able to get out atleast without looking terrible.

So even if you think Floyd was shook Manny gave him an easy way out which he should not have done considering what he had to gain from that fight and how his rep suffered because of his choice.

Pacquiao needs to stop ducking the best fighters and hiding behind Arum. If he really wanted to fight the best, all he has to do is do it. You can't put all the blame on Arum for Pacquiao's ducking.

A top level fighter needs to focus on his craft. Promoters have hundreds of petty details to deal with. A very few fighters can do both, but this is the same reason the highest paid athletes all have agents.
