Examples of why you picked a fighter to win who lost...........

Made this thread as i was talking about Huck/Ola and how i assumed after watching Ola beat Enzo that he would recognize some of the mistakes he made against Enzo and put it right against Huck, namely his inactivity, having assumed this i felt his supeior skills would shine through but he fought the same fight he did against Enzo and lost.

I thought Hatton would lose to Manny but i felt like Manny Steward that Hatton was gonna give him a lot of trouble but ultimately get caught later in the fight, i looked at the way Pac looked disorganized against Morales in their 3rd fight when Morales pressured him, that led me to question his footwork when pressured, i thought if Hatton can put him under that kinda of position and keep him there it could be a tough night, i even thought he might fall behind in the fight due to this but that he would eventually catch Hatton on the way in, in the mid to late rounds. I started to think that a pressure guy will give Manny problems, it quickly became apparent that pressure guys are exactly who he does not!! have problems with, not since he improved his counter punching skills and worked on pivoting away from the ropes when pressured etc, using his legs more and fighting to the plan where he is keeping the fight in the centre.

    What you got?

I thought Valero was a hypejob and DeMarco's boxing skills were good enough to beat him.

I scored the Juan Diaz fight with Malignaggi and contrary to popular belief the fight was extremely close, Malignaggi threw a lot of jabs but many of them missed and Diaz landed the solid shots throughout the fight, particularly when Paulie went into that Mayweather shell, he would break through with the hooks at times. I had for Diaz by one round but would not have argued the other way.

What i think Paulie did that he got too much credit for was, he dictated almost the whole fight, not that he was necessarily landing!, but that he was dictating the pace and looked as though he was winning because he was getting off first quite a lot.

I was torn as who to pick the rematch because i felt Diaz won but i knew that people would again see Malignaggi dictating the pace and assume he is winning rounds despite not always connecting etc, in the end i went for Diaz as i did think he won the first fight, as it turned out Sheilds tried to turn Diaz into a Boxer and he got picked apart because of it, it was not even close like the first fight because of that.

I picked Kostya to KO Hatton in about 4 rounds. Im still stunned watching some of the shots Ricky was able to take that he couldnt even be within 10 feet of these days.

I picked Pavlik to beat Hopkins, but I also thought it was a pick em fight. Back in those days it wasnt AS obvious that Kelly only has one move and would get the balls boxed off of him.

I picked Oscar over Pac for obvious reasons. I still think had the fight happened a few years earlier (and Im not even talking prime Oscar) that Pac gets his head kicked in.

Hopkins over Taylor in the rematch (still think he earned the nod.)

Kessler over Ward...that is all I will say about that one.

Forrest over Mayorga because Mayorga is **** and Forrest had alot of talent. I thought he would put on a clinic. I think had his shoulder not been ****ed up and he was totally healthy that he would have put a clinic on Mayorga.

This is a really good thread. I'm going to give you a more general answer. There are 4 main mistakes I have made more than once when picking fights. I have been watching boxing my whole life, and I still sometimes make these same mistakes (but less so as I get older).

              1) picking a fighter based on either physical strength or punching power.
              2) picking a very good pressure fighter to beat a very good defensive fighter.
              3) picking a fighter because you are biased (even if you do not realize you are biased)
              4) picking one fighter over the other based on performances against past opponents. Especially against common opponents.

Yeah - for all four of these, the better defensive fighter is going to win most of the time. Boxing is "hit and not get hit." What I have learned is that whoever is better at the "not get hit" part will win 90% of the time!

I thought Ward was just too Green to get past Kessler.

                  All reasonable picks though imo.

You seem to go with conventional wisdom in these picks and generally the favourite always does win in Boxing so..........

I think almost everyone thought Pavlik would beat Hopkins due to Hopkins stamina and that Mosley was up against it with Margarito.

I picked ALL of those fights the same way except for Kessler over Ward. All good picks in my book, and some will still argue that BHop beat Taylor both times.
