    Considering it's history, the current state of American heavyweight boxing in particular is actually shocking, Chris Areolla is the best they have, unthinkable 20 years ago.
    It kinda hits home when you put it like that, Arreola would have a hard enough time getting by the likes of Tony Tucker, Ray Mercer.

        Probably a combination of both. Basketball has remained very popular in the US but as it's popularity increases throughout the world, your starting to see an increase in international competition though clearly we still produce the best overall talent.

        However, boxing participation in the US has gone done considerably. I'll throw out one particular statistic which is very telling:

        Tim Smith explores the resurgence of boxing gyms in New York City and what they mean to the community.


        In the past 20 years, though, there has been a decrease in the number of boxing gyms in New York, going from a high of 150 in the five boroughs in the mid-1980s to about 50 today.
        It's probably safe to assume this roughly speaks for the rest of the nation as well.
