Back in the amateur days. He was trying to recover from an injury.

Vitali admitted it in a book.

He had a kickboxing injury in 1996, which did not heal as fast as he wanted, and went to a doctor for medication. He received stuff, which contained steroids (helps to heal/grow tissue) and was removed from 1996 Olymic games (where he was about to fight as superheavyweight boxer). His brother Wlad replaced him, and won gold.

On the one hand, Vitali did not want to dope - he just wanted to get rid of an injury (or at least he puts it that way). O.t.o.h., HE was the professional sportsman, and should have excerted better control on the meds he took. So, he should have asked this doc, if the meds contained substances, which would register as "juice".

        The story sounds true.

According to this site http://fighthype.com/pages/content7344.html Wladimir doesn't want to take the tests.

When has a person who has been caught ever admitted that they used it to get better?

An athlete claiming "I didn't know it was illegal" or "it was for an injury" is believable for many people when they want to believe it.

I pretty much never believe it, whether it's someone with a nice reputation like Shane Mosley or a loudmouth like James Toney.
