Does Gerald McClellan get placed higher than his credentials merit?

I know his story is tragic and very sad and boo hoo and all that, and it gets alot of coverage. I was wondering, do you think this fact blurs peoples judgement a little and causes them to place him higher than he actually deserves in the grander scheme of things? When you look at his record, you'd have to put him on a level with the likes of someone like Jeff Lacy, certainly nothing amazing.

I put him above Lacy. His power was undeniable. Unfortunitely most of his title fights came against very limited opposition but he was very exciting.

His win over Jackson puts him above Lacy in my eyes.

But yes, a lot of how he is viewed is based upon the talent he showed rather than who he showed it against.

I also think he benefits from his two points losses not being filmed. Perhaps if there was video of him being outboxed by journeymen, people wouldn't think much of him. As it is all we have is video of him destroying everyone, and almost destroying Benn.

          u cant be serious?

lets compare lacy and mcclellans resumes shall we? lacy has two decent wins, syd vanderpool and robin reid. vaderpools only accomplishments are a 10 round gift decision over glen johnson and winning the ibf 168lb title against a bum only to lose it in his first defence. robin reid was a decent fighter who also held a title briefly, but he was past his best when he fought lacy. lacy fought 2 world class oponents (calzaghe and taylor) and got completely dominated on both occassions, he also managed to get knocked out by the corpse of roy jones.. hardly on mcclellans level.

gerald mcclellan fought julian jackson twice, knocking him out on both occassions. jackson was 46-1 the first time they fought with like 43-44 KOs and his only loss coming 20 something fights earlier against the great mike mccallum. mcclellan also blew away a faded but still very dangerous john mugabi in a round. theres no doubt his resume is a bit short, but we all know why. anyone who knows jack **** about boxing can tell he was headed for great things. by the same token anyone who knows jack **** about jeff lacy could tell he was a hype job all along. even wih his career cut short the way it was his resume still surpasses lacys by far with the jackosn win alone.

nobody is even rating mcclellan that high, ppl are just aware he was one of the biggest punchers and best looking prospects in a long time who sadly never got a chance to prove how good he really was. his first fight with julian jackson showed he had it in him though, jackson gets severly overrated, not many fighters in the history of the sport could hang with him. he gets a bad rep based on fights that happened after gerald ruined him. follow his career and its obvious he was never the same after that fight, but when he fought gerald he was a monster.

also u shouldnt be dissrespectful to the injuries of mcclellan "boo hoo and all that".. **** u and all that.. punk

Agreed, I noticed that too and it was certainly disrespectful, you should know better than that TS, show some respect.

Given Julian Jackson's best weight class, natural size (compared to G-Man), and eye issues, maybe McClellan's wins over him aren't quite as good as they would appear on paper, but I definitely think McClellan was a better fighter than Lacy.

McClellan should be ranked above Lacy. He knocked out arguably the hardest P4P puncher of all-time in Julian Jackson twice and another great knockout puncher in Mugabi. All in a total of 7 rounds.

Julian Jackson was an elite fighter and he beat him twice, that alone is better than ANYTHING Jeff Lacy ever did, as Lacy would not stand a chance against an elite fighter.

If anything gets overrated its his punching power, as he did not really KO anyone who was renowned, with a good beard, Jackson was renowned but Jackson always had questions over his chin, Norris also Ko'ed Mugabi so........
