Chavez did inflict alot of damage, but Taylor did have a few good wins after. But he did get KOed against Crisanto Espana that was a big puncher and Terry Norris. He coveted a rematch with Chavez that came years later and his chin failed him again

Taylor was still a good formidable fighter after Chavez, just not 100% of what he was. Sort of like how Fernando Vargas was not 100% of what he was after Trinidad, but he was still a formidable fighter when DLH beat him.

Taylor beat Aaron Davis for the WBA 147 lb. title a year after losing to Chavez, which was the 2nd best win of Taylor's career, with the best being the McGirt win. I remember talks about negotiations for a Chavez-Taylor 2 happening later in 1990, before Taylor moved up to fight Davis, but I don't know precisely why they fell apart. After Taylor fought Ernie Chavez in late 1991, he and Duva talked about fighting Chavez again, this time at WW.

Taylor having weight problems at 140 and the talent level being so deep at 147 make me think that even if he had never fought Chavez, that his stay the top of the sport would've been short regardless. His style and short, stocky frame against the likes of hard hitters like Simon Brown, Ike Quartey, Felix Trinidad? Maybe he would've been better off fighting stablemate Pernell Whitaker. As it was, Team Taylor wasn't the protective type anyway. They put him in there with McGirt after Taylor had 20 or so pro fights and McGirt had twice as many, and had Taylor fight Chavez who had three times as many pro fights as Taylor. After Taylor struggled in a title defense with Glenwood Brown, Taylor's team put him in there with Terry Norris. Great move. Cristano Espana would've always been a tough matchup for Taylor with his style and dimensions (or Taylor's lack of). Eventually Taylor did go back down to 140, but that was probably out of desperation for a big money fight in a Chavez rematch. Both guys had clearly declined, especially Taylor with whom you could visibly see the effects of every clean Chavez punch that landed to the head. It still actually turned out to be a pretty good fight, much better than expected.
