    Cotto with Steward: Opinions

What do you all think about Emmanuel training Cotto now?
I personally don't think Miguel is shot, I think he could still beat most top WW's and would give any guy in his weight range a great fight. He has never had a top trainer and I am excited to see what Steward can do with him.

i'm excited for cotto as well and i hope it works!

however, part of me is very skeptical about this cotto/steward tandem. i'm not too sure if cotto will humble himself enough to listen and follow steward and let his coach run the show.

we all know cotto practically runs his training camp (i think even when he was with evangelista) and is surrounded by yes-men.

Steward is a trainer that Cotto is gonna respect for obvious reasons. Cotto does have boxing ability that he has shown when he gets hurt or is tired. Also he has the ability to turn lefty and being effective to some degree. Steward knows this and is not to change the fighter but to use what he has to make him better.

If Cotto want to continue his career it is what he has to do. To a degree it helped Barrera to be such a slugger and use his boxing/counterpunching ability and it extended his career greatly after the Jones loses. Also Steward helped Chavez in the Randall rematch to box more and not to depend soley on his power since Chavez did have the ability to box.

I guess we will wait and see but Foreman size and ability looks like a hard matchup.

great move by Cotto. he finally has a world class proven great trainer with him. his uncle and the other guy were towel holders who probably will never develop or guide any other top fighters. Cotto isn't shot he just took two tough losses to two great fighters in their prime. I like Steward with Cotto and he could make positive modifications. Foreman will be a tough test to solve though.

I don't see what Cotto can learn from Manny or add to his arsenal from what Manny teaches.

Manny is a teacher of an upright, plant the back foot, use a stiff jab style that works for guys like Taylor Wlad and of course Hearns

Cotto is a front foot, torque with his his left (strong) side for leverage and using a jab for set up type of fighter

I have turned into quite the Cotto fan and I hope he can indeed bounce back but I dont see what Manny brings

that's why I don't understand this move, Manny's fighters aren't exactly great inside fighters and if Cotto's going to move up to 154, he's going to be at a height and reach disadvantage against almost everybody he faces there

I think Manny P may have humbled him enough for the both of them. Steward won't take any crap from cotto, i think this will be the test for if cotto is shot or not.

Too late. Way too late. And as E said, not sure it's that great a fit. But Steward has been wanting the job for a long time so maybe he seems something. But at this stage, I'm not sure it matters.

I think Manny's got more in his arsenal than that. I don't think he'll impose that strategy on a shorter guy like Cotto. Of course he'd use it on a giant like wlad, but i don't think he's limited to that, I dunno tho, what shorter guys has manny worked with?

I think Steward can help his defense.

He can work on his clinching.

Using his jab more effectively to set up other punches.

And since Steward does train a lot of guys who fight like Foreman he can provided great sparring partners.

And he has the insight on how to fight guys like Foreman.
