Why do they have "Weigh ins" for the Heavyweight division?

It's not like they have to make weight. All they gots to be is +195 or something right? So what's the purpose of weighing heavyweights. Protocol perhaps? Tradition? Drama? Custom? I guess just to make things official huh? I'm not suggesting not to jump on the scale to get their weight. I'm talkin about the "weigh ins" Ya know? Cus technically, heavyweights don't have to take clothes off. I'd just weigh in with what i got on. When has a heavyweight not made weight cus he was too heavy? LoL. Just puttin it out there.

Well, for the underweights i can understand. They have to weigh between "X" amount of pounds. I don't even think they can be over or under. They gots to be on weight precise. So i understand a formal weigh in presentation. Cus they all weigh in the day before the fight. But when fight night comes, they will be heavier. Thats why they have how much they "weigh" and then how much they weigh in the ring for fight night.

it's a good point but like others have said it's good for them and the fans to know how much their opponent will weigh. not only strategically perhaps but there's a certain ease psychologically of knowing how much you opponent will approximately weight for the fight!

It's basically for hype....the pose off....the staredown.....maybe for a few choice words between the fighters......you know....gotta lather it up a bit.....basically it's all for show......I suppose knowing what they weight in at is somewhat usefull for the opponent but not by much......
