Montreal's Joachim Alcine retained his WBC International and North American Boxing Association super-welterweight titles Saturday with a technical knockout of Elio Ortiz in the 10th round.
Wanted to post about this fight because it took place in my hometown (well, across the river from it, but close enough). Unfortunately it was a small venue and try as I might I couldn't get tickets in time
.
For those that don't know, Alcine is in the top 5 WBC super-welterweight ratings, is unbeaten, and it getting closet to hopefully getting his title shot.
Alcine looked great in the first round by deilvering a liver shot to Ortiz that nearly knocked him out of the match right then and there. Tough Ortiz stood back up just in time and looked impressive at times, even knocking Alcine down himself a few ruonds later, though Alcine was off-balance at the time so the shot was not as hard as it might have first appeared. The fact that Alcine bounced right back from it showed that it did little damage.
Alcine left him too vulernable at times and seemed reluctant to unleash one of the quick combinations that he's known for. Ortiz was getting hit shots in but never controlling the fight for more than a few seconds.
Eventually Alcine gave the crowd what it wanted to see. About halfway through the 10th rounds, after a bit of dancing Alcine had Ortiz on the ropes and delivered a succession of head and body shots that was so quick that you had to see it on the slo-mo replay in order to truly appreciate it. The stunned Ortiz wobbled for a bit and was then down. After the count reached 8 or 9, Ortiz shook his head and the ref ended the fight.
Alcine still has some things to work on but in such a weak division he has a good chance of making waves, provided that he is given the fights he deserves. Hopefully more people will be able to see this true contender in action soon.
