Comments Thread For: Last Chance For Guzman To Leave Lasting Impresssion

By Jake Donovan - It’s put up or shut up time.

Not that Joan Guzman has been doing that much talking in recent time, mind you. The undefeated Dominican has been all business in recent weeks, preparing for his rematch with Al Funeka at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas (Saturday, HBO 10:30PM ET/PT).

The rematch comes about due to the controversial nature of their first fight, last November in Quebec City, Canada. Most who viewed the bout (which also aired on HBO) had Funeka winning the bout, some scoring it close, others by a landslide.

Only one of the three judges agreed with masses, with the other two officials seeing it even. Their questionable scorecards proved to be the difference between Guzman remaining unbeaten (29-0-1, 17KO) and coming home with his first loss and very little remaining upside.

How his record reads is no longer of relevance. This weekend will make or break his career.

Some fighters are defined by their record, or so caught up in protecting it that they nibble around the edges rather than seek the toughest challenges. [Click Here To Read More]

as a long time guzman fan, I agree with this article, this is his last chance.

His career has been plagued with misfortune, some of it his fault some of it not. He has never quite lived up to his potential and because he is getting older now, it's due or die time. He needs this fight in the worst way and it wont be an easy task by a long shot.

I don't know about last chance he has messed up a good ammount and he would certainly have to work his way back into the mix but the man has talent so it is not out of the question that he could get back into the mix. Once you get back in the mix you never know somebody might think he is washed up and he springs a suprise on him then he is basically right back where he is now.

It is certainly a good idea for him to win the fight though if he want to do big things in the near future though.

The loser of this fight might not get another chance at doing anything significant again, Guzman loses and people will say he's washed up and doesn't have it anymore and if Funeka loses people will still avoid him because he's a freak of nature at the weight.

I just do not think there is that much shame in losing to a physical freak like Funeka and it would be Guzman's first actual loss. He would still have a glossy record and has been on TV a good ammount if someone thinks he is washed up I could see him getting a shot he does not really deserve. Then all he needs to do is take advantage of it.

What I meant was that that would be excuse people would use not to fight Guzman, Guzman would still be a dangerous opponent for people to fight.

True but if he is thought to be washed up I have to think someone would want to add his scalp to their resume. Not an ideal situation to be in for sure though.

I still think Funeka wins it but i hope Guzman prevails even though Funeka deserves it more. This is definatley the last chance for Guzman to do something big, he's had so little chances but when he has got them something has happened like weight issues or whatever.

This isn't how his career should have turned out. With a good manager/promoter he could have been maybe a 4 weight world champion by now.

Yet another great piece by Donovan, he hit everything right on the head. I was never sold on Guzman, he's been lucky he's kept his 0 so far, mostly due to his innactivity. Wasn't he supposed to fight Katsidis also at one point? whatever happened to that fight? Guzman is another Zab Judah with no losses in my eyes, lots of skill but not committed enough. I really hope Funeka wins, he deserves it after the last two fights he's been in, for this dude to win he needs to KO the guy and win by points as well it seems, poor Funeka.
