Plus Pacquiao is not a HW. There has always been international competition in the lighter weights, but the HW division was traditionally dominated by americans. Now that is changing, and they don't like it, my opinion.

From Roberto Duran to Salvaldor Sanchez to countless other smaller foreign fighters were always very popular in the United States. Now try naming a few foreign heavyweights that were popular in the USA? The list would be short and for what ever reason the heavyweights have always been looked at differently then the other weight classes. And one of the reasons is that it has always been taken for granted that the USA dominated the heavyweight division. The division was dominated by Americans until Lewis won the title. Before that the last foreign born heavyweight champs between Johansson and Lewis were Domiani and Coetzee. And as far as Lewis is concerned if he had happened to been born an American I think he would have been very popular in the USA. Because I don't recall him ever being all that popular. Someone also mentioned that Holmes was not that popular. I believe the reason Larry may not have been as popular as he may have been was simply because he followed in the footsteps of Ali. And when Tyson came on the seen he changed all that and everybody and their brother was into the heavyweight division. Now, onto the great white hope.

I will go ahead and say it. Before, should I dare to say it, Tommy Morrison was the WBO heavyweight champ who was the last white American to hold the crown? You would have to go way back into the 1950's when Marciano was the champ. And since Marciano many have been clamoring for the next "Great White Hope." And in this process fighters such as Gerry Cooney became very rich after having a very mediocre career. Just because he happened to be a big white Irish lad from Long Island. As far as the Klit brothers are concerned for obvious reasons they don't fit the Great White Hope mold.

I also believe that if the Klitchko's were from Western Europe instead of Eastern they may be more popular in the USA. Because there may be some out there that can't get passed the fact that they are from a former Soviet Bloc country. And maybe they are to smart for their own good and many can't relate to them. Or maybe it is the language because Wlad may have thought it was humorous when he was talking about the pizza face yet he left many Americans wondering what the hell he was talking about. And just because someone has good command of the English language does not mean they understand or know how to talk slang. I learned that in my travels around the world while in the US Army. Or maybe I have it completely wrong and it is simply that many Americans find Wlad to be boring. However, if the Klit brothers happened to be farm boys from Nebraska or good ole boys from the swamps of Georgia or even surfer dudes from California. It is my opinion that it would not matter if they won every fight by brutal KO within five rounds or won ever fight by a 12 round boring ass unanimous decision. Simply because so many have been clamoring for an American Great White Hope for so long they would settle for either and be happy about it.
